Software Engineer Intern, Rails & Localization

Fearless is excited to launch our internship program in partnership with the Maryland Lighthouse AI Initiative. This program provides college students, recent graduates, and career changers with real-world experience in the government technology industry. Interns will gain hands-on technical skills alongside a broad set of professional skills - including interviewing, resume building, and networking - to support job readiness and long-term career growth. This internship will begin on June 1 and end on August 14, 2026.

As a Rails + Localization Engineer Intern on the WorkerX team, you will support the Employer's Workflow within a Family and Medical Leave Insurance application - the system that helps workers and their employers navigate paid family and medical leave.

Your work will focus on supporting Ruby on Rails features, resolving User Acceptance Testing (UAT) feedback, rolling out translations to make the application more accessible to residents, and keeping documentation accurate as the product evolves. You'll contribute directly to production code and ship user-facing improvements that real employers across the state will use.

Your Responsibilities in this Role:

  • Address UAT feedback tickets, working through reproduction, fix, and verification
  • Assist with minor bug fixes and feature support in Ruby on Rails
  • Update content and user-facing copy across the Employers Workflow
  • Support translation and localization implementation, helping bring the application to additional languages
  • Contribute to structured documentation updates so the team's knowledge stays current and useful
  • Participate in agile ceremonies - standups, sprint planning, retros - and contribute to team discussions and code reviews

Work Experience

Project and Skill Requirements:

  • Familiarity with Ruby on Rails - through coursework, bootcamp projects, personal projects, or self-directed learning
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript - comfortable reading and writing basic JS in a web application context
  • Working knowledge of CSS - able to style web pages and make targeted adjustments to existing styles
  • Comfort reading code you didn't write - willingness to trace through an existing codebase, ask questions, and make small, careful changes rather than starting from scratch
  • Basic Git and GitHub skills - can create branches, commit changes, open pull requests, and respond to code review feedback (or eagerness to learn these workflows quickly)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills - can explain what you did, ask clear questions, and write a useful pull request description
  • A collaborative mindset - we work as a team and value the people on it
  • Motivation to learn - much of this internship is about growing your skills, and we'll meet you where you are
  • A genuine passion for helping your community
