Primary Purpose and Essential Functions
The Thomas J Long School of Pharmacy, University of the Pacific invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Chair and Associate/Full Professor, Pharmacy Practice. Chair is an administrative appointment with responsibilities that are in addition to those of a tenure-track faculty member in the given department. The Chair reports to the Dean and serves as one of the primary representatives of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy. The Chair has shared responsibility for developing and following the strategic plan in supporting the mission, goals, and objectives of the University and School. The Chair is responsible for working effectively and collegially with department members and other administrative leaders.

  • Develop, implement, and assess the department's mission, vision, goals, and objectives in alignment with the School and University.
  • Coordinate and/or mentor the development of each faculty within the department in the areas of teaching, research/scholarship, and service.
  • Promote and support innovative pharmacy practice, research, and advocacy for the profession.
  • Oversee and ensure equitable workload distribution and resource allocation among faculty.
  • Serve as an exemplary educator with a teaching commitment commensurate with that of other School administrators.
  • Conduct scholarship and service as appropriate for the position.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and goal setting for faculty and other personnel affiliated with the department.
  • Support curricular and programmatic initiatives, including continuing education.
  • Promote assessment-based continuous quality improvements.
  • Recruit and retain highly qualified faculty and personnel.
  • Foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in education, research, and service overseen by the department faculty members.
  • Provide budgetary and resource oversight for the department.
  • Manage the day-to-day department operations including personnel (faculty and staff) management, supervision, and allocation of space in coordination with the Dean's office.
  • Conduct regular department faculty meetings.
  • Represent the department in cabinet meetings.
  • Support the policies and procedures of the School and University.
  • Nurture positive relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide a strong representation of the Department at the institutional and professional level, including AACP and other professional associations.
  • Perform other activities and services at the request of the Dean.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The academic experience at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in an accredited pharmacy school (or equivalent relevant experience).
  • Previous experience in leadership or management; and is licensed, or eligible for licensure, in California; expectation is California licensure in good standing within one year of hire.
  • Participation in state or national pharmacy professional organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate training (Residency, Fellowship, Ph.D., etc).
  • State or national recognition of expertise in the practice area (e.g., board certifications, fellow designation).
  • Experience in curriculum development.
  • Experience in educational assessment.
  • Supervisory experience and familiarity with CA employment laws.
  • Experience with budget and resource management.
  • Experience in working with ACPE and/or regional higher education accreditation standards organizations.
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • External funding experience (e.g., grants, contracts) or other evidence of innovation/ entrepreneurial activity.
  • Experience in generating internal and external partnerships, collaborations, high functioning teams.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work environment/Work Week/Travel:
Requires extended periods of sitting and standing, occasional walking, and infrequent bending and stooping. Work is primarily performed in a standard university classroom.
Hiring Range $160,000 - $180,000 (We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.)
