Position Highlights The Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (SW CASC) is seeking an extended temporary employment Communication Specialist (Communications Specialist II) to develop and implement a communications program. The SW CASC is one of nine regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CASCs) across the US that addresses cultural and natural resource issues in the context of climate change. The CASCs are cooperative agreements between the US Geological Survey (USGS) and a university host; the University of Arizona is the host institution for the SW CASC. Other universities that are part of our consortium includes Northern Arizona University, Utah State University, University of Nevada Las Vegas, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego/Scripps Institute of Oceanography, University of California Davis.

The CS will work closely with the SW CASC Director and Assistant Director to facilitate communication that describe and promote the mission and science activities of the SW CASC. The CS will also coordinate outreach activities within the Southwest region, and engage with National CASC activities as well. This position is on the University of Arizona, Tucson-campus in the ENR2 Building. Limited remote work may be possible by agreement with Director.

This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Communication
Specialist will provide program management, coordination, outreach, and
engagement support for the SW CASC. Essential duties include, but are not
limited to:

  • Collaborate with the
    University Director and Deputy Director to update the communication and
    outreach strategic plan
  • Administers the
    execution of the SW CASC communication and outreach strategic plan
  • Directs
    communications for the purpose of disseminating science results to partners
    across the Southwest
  • Research, write,
    edit, and publish monthly newsletters and web articles of recent research
    activities, research partner highlights, funded research projects
  • Create video
    products
  • Create communication
    products for public presentations
  • Maintain an
    up-to-date website and oversee ongoing technical website maintenance
  • Updates social media
    accounts (LinkedIn, Instagram, X)
  • Develops and track
    metrics to evaluate social media outreach efforts
  • Coordinates news
    release within the University of Arizona, Communication Specialists from the
    other university consortiums, and the National CASC
  • Ensure compliance
    with USGS, Department of Interior, and UA communication requirements
  • Work closely with
    the Evaluation team to evaluate effectiveness of communication and outreach
    plan
  • Support the
    communication training and activities of SW CASC graduate and postdoctoral
    fellows
  • When appropriate,
    represent the SW CASC in meetings of other regional CASCs and National CASCs
  • Regularly
    participates in SW CASC meetings (virtual and in-person)
  • Additional duties
    may be assigned

Knowledge, skills
and abilities:

  • Demonstrates
    experience in communicating complex science topics to non-expert audiences
    using media such as science articles, news releases, data visualizations,
    videos, science posters, or technical reports
  • Strong organization
    skills, attention to consistency and detail
  • Excellent writing
    and editing skills
  • Committed to a
    collaborative, team environment
  • Familiarity with
    content management systems, other technical aspects of maintaining online
    material, MS Office Suite and presentation software
  • Proficient in common
    software supporting external outreach, such as Trello, Mailchimp
  • Fluency in
    maintaining and growing social media networks
  • Broad knowledge of
    climate science, climate impacts science and issues
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, in an area of science related to climate change, science communications, ecology, earth science, atmospheric science, oceanography, biology, hydrology AND
  • Three years of experience working in science writing or communications
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience creating graphics and document layouts using multimedia publishing tools (Canva, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
  • Three plus years of work experience in a communications or public information role at a research organization, public sector agency, or environmental non-governmental agency
  • Experience in organizing and leading webinars
  • Experience facilitating meetings and workshops and designing communications training material
