General Supervisor - Department of Defense

Position Summary: This position is responsible for supervising and coordinating all defense area shipbuilding activities, and performance and schedules at our vast, 63-acre facility. Significant heavy manufacturing takes place both in several fab shops, as well as on the waterfront. The successful candidate will support the working men and women on our team by ensuring the operational effectiveness; overseeing the fabrication efforts in the defense operations areas. There is a heavy emphasis placed on safety, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.

Detailed Description:



  • Direct and coordinate activities of the business concerned with fabrication of our military builds.
  • Establish, implement, and ensure compliance with departmental policies, goals, objectives, and procedures.


  • Coordinate budget activities to fund military operations, maximize investments and increase efficiency.
  • Monitor suppliers to ensure that they efficiently and effectively provide needed goods and services.
  • Direct administrative activities directly related the military build process.


  • Plan and program sequence of tasks.
  • Conduct tests and inspections of products and processes to evaluate quality and performance.
  • Complete documentation needed to support testing procedures, quality assurance, and compliance.
  • Optimize military build productivity and performance.
  • Examine work pieces for defects to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Train, instruct, and mentor employees on most efficient ways of completing a job.


  • Adhere to a Quality Control program with internal auditing.
  • Develop and maintain military build procedures and work instructions / acceptance criteria.
  • Propose and implement Capital Projects / Investments in the fabrication trades, and justify the expense.


  • Enter time, enforce company policies, and appraise employee performance.
  • Serve as a resource to key stakeholders (i.e. crews, leaders, boat reps, senior leadership, etc.).
  • Read and interpret blue prints and engineering drawings to determine materials required and task sequences.
  • Work with the Purchasing Department to requisition materials, supplies, equipment, etc.
  • Manage foremen and front line supervisors in the Department of Defense.
  • Confer with supervisors in other departments to coordinate operations and activities between departments.
  • Plan and develop new production processes.
  • Study production schedules and estimate worker hour requirements for completion of job assignments.
  • Work within collective bargaining agreement and enforces safety regulations.
  • Interpret specifications and job orders to workers, and assigns duties.
  • Establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
  • Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew.
  • Analyze and resolve work problems, or assist workers in solving work problems.


  • Initiate or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Maintain time and production records.
  • Estimate requisitions of all materials for the Department of Defense.
  • Confer with other supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments.
  • Provide training and guidance to hourly staff.
  • Ensure that action items are tracked to closure in a timely manner.


  • Complete supervisory safety leadership training to include the following: incident investigations, inspections & interactive audits, hazard awareness, JSA development and any other EHS training pertaining to the department.


  • Attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • Ability and willingness to engage in highly energetic pursuits on the waterfront.


  • Maintain a commitment to and promote the Quality and Environmental, Health & Safety Policies.


  • Abide by all organizational policies and procedures.



Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises 1 to 10 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding's policies, and procedures. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Willingness to be a mentor, and demonstrate leadership skills that align with the mission, vision, and values of Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • High School Diploma
  • Commitment to quality
  • Either certification in, or immediate willingness to complete ASNT NDT Level II Certification Program
  • Extensive knowledge of ship building processes
  • Passage of basic ABS Steel Fitting Test and ABS Weld Test (3G Vertical Up, Wire Size .052, straight CO2, on 3/4" Steel)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Highly accountable
  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience in steel fabrication
  • Read and understand plans and specifications, including one-line diagrams, cable schedules, ladder diagrams, and loop diagrams
  • Ability to work as a team and individually with a positive and professional attitude



Desired Qualifications:



  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Degreed in one of the following: Welding Technology; Welding and Fabrication Engineering; Industrial Engineering; Production Engineering; General Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; or Materials Science
  • Prior shipyard experience a plus
  • 7+ years management experience or commensurate education
  • Experience in Quality Control and Inspection
  • Prior use of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience using Time and Attendance tracking software
