Sterile Processing Technician Quality Review

A Brief Overview:
Under direction of CSP Department Manager and Director, the QI specialist assures that all guidelines for the processing and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and supplies for perioperative services meet industry standards and regulatory requirements. This position serves as a liaison between perioperative service staff members and physicians for department quality metrics.

What you will do:

  • In coordination with department leadership, monitors and ensures daily operational compliance with the standards governing sterile processing activities from such agencies as The Joint Commission, OSHA, AORN, AAMI; as well as state and local ordinances.
  • Assists CSP staff in meeting standards for instrument processing, set builds and monitoring output for quality and integrity of final product.
  • Assists in monitoring of department staff training and orientation. Ensures all staff are knowledgeable as to applicable standards, procedures and safety requirements by on floor and at table presence to monitor work quality and flow.
  • In coordination with the CSP Leadership, assists with the maintenance, inventory, and implementation of newly acquired and existing instrument trays/sets, instruments, and supplies. Collaboratively works with the appropriate staff to maintain accurate instrument count sheets and make revisions as necessary.
  • Ensures that the policies and procedures as they relate to decontamination, disinfection and sterilization of instruments are maintained appropriately and are consistent with the standard of care. Assists with the collection of quality control indicators as it relates to perioperative customer services, staff productivity, and infection control.
  • Assists with identification of staff educational needs and development of programs designed for the development and implementation of newly acquired instrumentation and sterilization processes. Acts as CSP resource between the sterile processing and perioperative staff to enhance communication regarding new practices, programs, and sterile processing issues.
  • Assists with the ongoing education of new and existing sterile processing staff via staff meetings,
  • in-services and orientation in collaboration with department leadership.
  • Maintains current knowledge and awareness in the field of surgical instrumentation and processing services by participating in educational and informational programs.
  • Employ statistical analysis to analyze methods of inspection, testing and service quality; evaluate records and prepare reports for management, including: results, conclusions and recommendations
  • Perform supplier qualification and continuous improvement audits.
  • Monitors quality assurance and policy and procedure guidelines and performs random quality audits. Drives quality assurance and quality improvement practices. Performs verification of manufacturer validation for instrumentation by following manufacturer instructions for use.
  • Performs quality control as required by the standards and recommended practices set forth by The Joint Commission, AORN, IAHCSMM and AAMI for all equipment, including the biological, chemical, and mechanical monitoring of sterilizers. Maintains quality assurance logs and documentation for all sterilization equipment and processes.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of standard work including change notices and revision history.
  • Reports and communicates quality improvement opportunities the leadership team and participates in collaborative problem solving. Provides real time feedback from audit activity to leadership team and staff.
  • Identifies quality data required to benchmark and assess CSP operations. Proactively seeks and identifies opportunities for improvement and implements related quality improvement initiatives that may result in operational efficiencies.
  • Monitors current metrics and analyzes results to identify trends. Analyzes data to identify root cases of operational concerns.
  • Organizes data and action plans into concise, easy to interpret reports.
  • Audits internal processes including but not limited to tray assembly, decontamination, shift handoffs, case cart completion, standard work compliance and
  • Develops and provides training and education programs for staff.
  • May provide input related to capital and minor equipment expenditures.

What you will need:

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Certified sterile processing technician (CRCST/CSPDT).
  • Two years of Certified CSP experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Quality Improvement process.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of the standards and recommended practices of AORN, AAMI and IAHCSMM.
  • Leadership/mentoring experience.
