Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate (SRA) position exists to join the Bondy-Denomy lab and contribute to two ongoing projects in a supportive role. Bondy-Denomy lab's primary interest is in understanding the mechanisms that underly interactions between bacteriophages and their hosts. We apply bioinformatics, genetics, and biochemistry to discover and characterize the molecules that dictate the success or failure of phage infection. SRA will work closely with a post-doc and graduate student mentors to fill a supportive role in two independent projects. Therefore applicant must be highly organized and collaborative. SRA will be working on the following two projects:

Project 1:
Theories immune systems defends bacteria from its viruses, bacteriophages, through synthesis of signaling molecules that activate the effectors. We want to understand what phage components activate the system and how Theories inhibits phage replication. For this we will use bacterial genetics and biochemistry approaches.

Project 2: Prolonged growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 42 C inactivates a Type I restriction modification, immune system. We have demonstrated the incredible heritability of this inactivation for up to 60 cell doublings. We have found that lon proteases are responsible for the degradation of the immune proteins at 42 C but have yet to describe the memory factor that propagates inactivation.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a basic science department within the School of Medicine that performs scientific research, training and teaching at Mission Bay and Parnassus Heights. It is also the home department for the multidisciplinary UCSF Immunology Program and Microbial Pathogenesis Program. The fields of Microbiology and Immunology encompass many aspects of human health and a goal of our research is to further the basic understanding of microbes and the immune system, as well as translate this knowledge into improvement of human health. Research in the department focuses on areas related to infectious diseases, immunology, and cancer. Our department also provides advanced research training to Postdoctoral Fellows. Graduate students working towards their Ph.D. degree are enrolled in the Herbert W. Boyer Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS) or the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Programs, depending on their research emphasis.

Required Qualifications

• SRA I: BA/BS in Biology, Lab animal science or a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
• SRA II: BA/BS in Biology, Lab animal science a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
• Practical knowledge of lab safety, basic measurements, scientific method
• Collaborative person that can reliably multi-task projects.
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)

Preferred Qualifications

• Detailed knowledge of microbiology and molecular genetics
• Experience performing biochemical techniques
• Skills in molecular biology techniques, including working with DNA, cloning, protein (immunoprecipitation and Western blotting), RNA extraction, PCR and qRT-PCR, and standard biochemical assays
