Basic Purpose

The position is responsible for the recruitment, tracking and scheduling of Volunteers for the Del Oro Division. Volunteers are a crucial part of program delivery for The Salvation Army in our mission to meet human needs wherever we find them. As such, volunteers assist Army officers and staff in natural disasters and emergencies, through hunger assistance programs which provide more than 1.67M meals last year, and through a myriad of additional programs that provide childcare and early childhood development, combat human trafficking, assist in substance abuse, and much more.

Each year, hundreds of people raise their hands to help their communities and it is the job of the volunteer coordinator to provide a welcoming experience through a thoughtful and informative onboarding that will identify their strengths and desires for advocacy and activity. As part of onboarding and inventorying volunteers, the Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for the successful screening and training of volunteers to ensure that they will be successful and safe in the execution of their volunteer responsibilities which may include background checks, risk management orientation, and Department of Transportation training which are already established training modules that are in current use.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities



  1. Coordinate aspects of volunteerism for the Division
  2. Act as the main point of contact for groups and individual volunteers for the Division
  3. Develop strong working relationship with Program Directors, Corps Officers and DHQ staff to gain intimate knowledge of Salvation Army programs and volunteer opportunities for the division
  4. With the help of the Director of Portfolio Data Management, oversee the volunteer recruitment database, to coordinate volunteers with volunteer opportunities across the division.
  5. Facilitate volunteer training and educate corps staff on how to use the volunteer database
  6. Coordinate and develop volunteer opportunities with corporations, small businesses, churches and the community; create press-friendly events that can be promoted through digital and print media.
  7. Work with the corps to identify volunteer opportunities & recruit volunteers, travel to corps locations as necessary.
  8. Assist with volunteer recognition events that may be help at the corps or DHQ.
  9. Work with the DHQ marketing team to promote volunteer bell ringing opportunities



Emergency Disaster Services



  1. Work with EDS Training/Outreach coordinator to inform volunteers about training schedules and reach out to volunteers with information about volunteer opportunities near them.
  2. Work with EDS Director to communicate and coordinate volunteer opportunities


During Disasters



  1. May be required to support the disaster from the office by calling partners and requesting volunteers or deploying to the field and serve as the volunteer coordinator, tracking volunteers but also directing volunteers where to go
  2. Coordinate with Hands on Volunteer network and CalVolunteers to multiply our workforce.
  3. Serve as main point of contact (POC) for all volunteer inquiries and assignments.
  4. Ensure and track volunteer signups.
  5. Schedule volunteers on Signupgenius.com for disaster response opportunities and ensure shifts are filled.
  6. Work with Incident Management Team to determine the best spot for volunteers to serve in the field.
  7. Set up just-in-time training for new and spontaneous volunteers.
  8. Work closely with the Logistics Chief and Operations Chief to determine needs for and locations of volunteers.
  9. Attend daily meetings with incident command team to determine the location and quantity of the need and resources donated goods.



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Additional Qualifications



  1. Experience with recruiting and training volunteers
  2. Associates Degree or above is preferred.
  3. 1-2 years of relative work experience in volunteer coordination, donations management, emergency disaster services or community outreach
  4. Proficient in a Windows environment (Microsoft Office) Outlook, Excel
  5. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  6. Excellent organizational, written and communication skills
  7. Ability to maintain a professional rapport with the public, officers and DHQ team
  8. Ability to work in a high- pressure environment
  9. Valid driver's license
  10. Ability to travel and work on site during disaster in Northern CA, Reno and Carson City



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



  1. Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis.
  2. Ability to grasp, push, and/or pull objects.
  3. Ability to reach overhead.
  4. Ability to operate telephone.
  5. Ability to lift to 25 lbs.
  6. Ability to operate a computer.
  7. Ability to process written, visual, and/or verbal information.
  8. Ability to operate basic office equipment and tools.
  9. Travel within Northern CA, Reno and Carson City required.
  10. Ability to work onsite during an Emergency Disaster.



Working Conditions



  1. Office will be located at our Divisional Headquarters in Sacramento, but this position will be required to travel to centers in Northern CA and Northern Nevada. You may also be required to work on site during a disaster.
  2. Work a standard workweek, but additionally may work evening, weekends, and overtime hours to accommodate EDS requirements and volunteer opportunities.



Certificates, Licenses, Registrations



  1. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  2. Must pass pre-employment and enroll in TSA random drug testing program as required by the Department of Transportation (DOT); and
  3. Complete The Salvation Army's Decision Driving course training.
  4. Authorize The Salvation Army to add name to DMV Pull Notice Program list for Driving records.
  5. Must possess valid California Class A and B license with good driving record.
