Lecturer - Visual Impairment, Orientation & Mobility (Part Time)

The Visual Impairments Program in Special Education, Department of Disability and Psychoeducational study has a part time Career Track (Non-Tenure) Lecturer position.

The successful candidate will teach two courses each semester and/or facilitate field experiences onsite in Tucson, Arizona (80%) and perform service (20%); provide feedback and advise students; participate in outreach, program initiatives, screening/selection of students; engage with department, college, and university communities; demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and service.

The role of orientation and mobility program faculty member is to provide instruction, guidance and mentorship to students pursuing careers as orientation and mobility specialists. The faculty member will deliver courses and training modules on various aspects of orientation and mobility, such as mobility techniques, sensory development, environmental awareness, and assistive technology. The faculty member will use effective teaching methods to ensure students gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter, design and develop the curriculum for orientation and mobility programs, and serve as a mentor and advisor to students. In addition, the faculty member will provide feedback, assess skill development, and ensure students meet the necessary competencies and standards of practice for Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) certification.
This is a 9-month (academic) teaching position (part time) at the Lecturer rank. The position requires teaching in-person courses in the fall and spring semesters. Additionally, this candidate may be asked to teach a summer course with compensation. This position is not tenure eligible. The anticipated start date is January 15, 2025.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Create learning objectives, select appropriate instructional materials, and structure courses to meet professional standards and industry requirements.
• Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the visual impairment program as assigned by the program director and the department.
• Supervise and evaluate students in practical teaching experience and practice, such as practicums, internships or field placements.
• Develop and foster partnerships with school districts, regional and state agencies, other colleges and universities, and stakeholders for engaged collaboration.
• Recruit students for the visual impairment - orientation and mobility program.
• Participate in grant writing with colleagues.
• Represent the orientation and mobility program in local, state, and national professional meetings and conferences.
• Adherence to robust safety practices and compliance with all applicable University and ACVREP health and safety regulations and responsibilities.

• Possess an earned Master's in Special Education or closely related field upon hire.
• A minimum of 5 years experience in teaching Orientation and Mobility.

• Certification (ACVREP) in orientation and mobility
• Experience in teaching, mentoring, and advising undergraduate and graduate students at accredited higher education institution(s).
• Experience with seeking external grant funding.
• Experience with developing partnerships with stakeholders for practicum and internship placements.
• Candidates who are open to teaching a course that is only offered in the summer.
• Experience in teaching visual impairment courses at the university level.
• Experience with orientation and mobility program in local, state, and national professional meetings and conferences.
