Position Highlights

The University of Arizona Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory invite applications for the JWST Arizona/Steward Postdocs in Early Galaxies and Reionization (JASPER) Scholar positions. The University of Arizona is a center of JWST research. In the area of early galaxy formation and reionization, Arizona scientists are leading a wide range of JWST programs to study the first galaxies, high-redshift quasars and supermassive black hole evolution, early large-scale structures, the intergalactic medium and cosmic reionization. JASPER Scholars are expected to collaborate with one or more JWST science teams. They will fully participate in data reduction and scientific analysis in these programs as well as in complimentary programs using HST and ground-based telescopes. JASPER Scholars are also encouraged to conduct their independent research programs with up to 50% of their research time.

UA/SO offers a world-class research environment in space science and astrophysics with strong interdisciplinary programs across the Departments of Astronomy, Physics, Optical Sciences, and Planetary Sciences. We provide direct access to various world-class observational and computational facilities for ground-based radio and optical observing.
All of the facilities of Steward Observatory will be available to the Scholar on an equal basis with members of our faculty, and the Scholar will be expected to lead high-profile, independent research as well as collaborate with SO faculty and scholars in the Department of Astronomy. The Scholar will be strongly encouraged to apply for time on any Steward facility directly as a principal investigator. The Scholar is also approved to submit research proposals as a PI to funding agencies in order to provide additional support for their own programs.

Offers will be made in Spring 2025 with a start date in Fall 2025.

Application review will begin on December 10, 2024. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their applications and upload all documents into the Box folder listed in "Special Instructions to the Applicant" by that date.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!
