Job Summary

Under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant or Police Lieutenant, a UCSF Police Officer protects life and property and enforces local, state, and federal laws. Officers perform regular law enforcement duties including providing community policing, foot, and vehicle patrol of the University of California and surrounding properties, investigating and preparing preliminary investigation reports, issuing citations, making arrests, assisting in the prosecution of violators of the law, providing crime prevention information, and serving as a proactive resource to a uniquely diverse community. Officers may also work as part of a security detail with civilian and other law enforcement agencies at University events, and perform other duties as assigned. Certified and conforms to the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).

Department Description

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Police Department provides contemporary police services including criminal investigation, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, emergency management, and site security services to a daily population of over 50,000 people at University and contract locations. Founded in 1864, UCSF includes the 107-acre Parnassus campus that is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy; a graduate division for pre and postdoctoral scientists; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals; and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. UCSF is considered one of the nation's premier health sciences teaching, training, and research centers. UCSF is the only UC campus dedicated exclusively to the health sciences.

Required Qualifications


  • Basic knowledge in the following areas: First Aid / CPR, campus streets, buildings, and parking lots, general law enforcement procedures, vehicle laws, and the use of firearms. New recruits - within 1 year of appointment
  • Observes situations analytically, impartially, and objectively, and records pertinent information accurately and completely. New recruits - within 1 year of appointment
  • Demonstrated verbal and written skills and the ability to interact with a diverse community.
  • Able to pass medical and psychological examinations, and an extensive background investigation in compliance with California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) standards.
  • Able to work rotating shifts in all inclement and diverse weather conditions. Daily functions may require wearing a uniform.
  • No felony convictions.
  • US citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship.
  • At least 21 years old at the time of hire.
  • Possess a valid California Driver's License with no restrictions other than corrective lenses and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Skill in speaking and writing English using appropriate vocabulary to provide information, and prepare written reports.

For Police Officer Position:
  • Graduation from high school
  • Hold a current California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic certificate or complete the California POST Regular Basic Course (RBC).
  • Obtain Proof of Eligibility from POST before full employment
  • SB2 and or SB960 as noted with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Gov. Code 1029/1031 compliant.
  • Maintain POST Firearms and PC 832 Arrest qualifications.
  • Candidates who have passed an academy but did not complete or pass an FTO program. Have a current Basic POST certificate are listed as a lateral candidate

License:
  • Current and valid driver's license with no restrictions other than corrective lenses and have a satisfactory driving record
