Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 2-3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team's core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) seeks a gift officer to join our team in support of our fundraising goals and objectives. The Assistant Director of Development is an integral member of the School's External Affairs team in securing philanthropic support for the Krieger School in pursuit of the mission of education, research, and discovery. Our team is dedicated to connecting the passions of our donors to the needs of the School in realizing our mission.

The Assistant Director of Development will build and maintain a donor portfolio with a focus on pipeline and discovery prospects from the undergraduate alumni community for the Krieger School's major gift pipeline. While interaction with constituents at all stages in the development cycle will occur, the Assistant Director will primarily focus on the discovery and qualification. The position will craft, execute, and manage a strategic plan to build a pool of potential leadership-level pipeline donors for the School. This involves prospect research and analysis, developing effective engagement strategies as well as collaborating and partnering with the Krieger School gift officers, constituent engagement team, and central Homewood Schools teams.

These responsibilities will be supplemented by supporting select departments, centers, and programs on annual giving initiatives and engagement opportunities. The position will not carry a designated territory, but rather will be open to all Krieger School discovery prospects in the United States; as such, an ability and willingness to travel domestically is essential.

Key responsibilities:

  • Create and execute a robust undergraduate discovery plan that establishes strategies to identify and qualify new potential prospects to build a pool for the Krieger School development team.
  • Conduct a minimum of 12-15 discovery outreaches per month to meet a goal of approximately 150 visits per year; develop, direct, and implement pre-qualification strategies for leadership annual giving and major gift prospects through discovery calls, personal visits, virtual engagement, and email.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of leadership annual, major, and planned gift prospects with a focus on leadership-level discovery across the United States. Effectively plan and execute gift strategies to cultivate, solicit, and steward such prospects.
  • Serve as a lead with select academic departments, centers and programs, while partnering with the Krieger School's development team to execute annual fundraising and alumni relations opportunities.
  • Develop annual fundraising goals and objectives in consultation with KSAS leadership.
  • Leverage and utilize the JHAS constituent management database and other relevant systems to create a process for identifying and tracking discovery and pipeline prospects within KSAS.
  • Prepare gift proposals, solicitation letters, and other cultivation and presentation materials for select donors.
  • Build a strong network of collegial partnerships with development and departmental representatives in areas across the institution with particular focus and collaboration with the Krieger School gift officers and constituent engagement team, as well as the central Hopkins Fund, JHTV, and alumni relations teams, among others.
  • Partner with the KSAS constituent engagement team to support, ensure event attendance, and recruit key volunteers who could assist in the School's advancement efforts (i.e., mentoring, panel presentation, lectures, etc.). Attend events for strategic prospect/discovery purposes.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Fast-paced, highly variable, and entrepreneurial; this role is best suited for an individual with deft interpersonal skills and collaborative instincts, high adaptability and creativity, intellectual curiosity, a service mindset, and a keen interest in advancing the mission of one of the world's great research universities.
  • Strong data management and data analytics skills to effectively manage discovery plan using the JHAS constituent management database, Microsoft Office suite, and other systems. Experience with Salesforce platform is preferred, but not required.
  • Keen project management skills to determine priorities and manage multiple projects at once.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; demonstrated effective writing skills.
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-divisional, and fast-paced organization.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout the United States for discovery meeting, events, and other KSAS and JHU activities.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to travel.
  • Must live within commuting distance to the Baltimore campus and able to work on-campus 3+ days per week and remotely the balance of the time
