Purpose of Position
Northern Kentucky University seeks a talented, versatile attorney to join its Office of Legal Affairs as an Associate General Counsel. Attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs partner with colleagues across campus and provide thoughtful advice, work product and leadership in all areas of a higher education legal practice. This work touches every part of the institution, from athletics, contracts, and construction to employment, student affairs, litigation, real estate, and research matters.

The office also leads efforts in federal and state regulatory compliance, advises employees regarding ethics matters, and responds to a high volume of open records requests. We seek excellence in this work, with high standards for professionalism and client service.
Primary Responsibilities
The Associate General Counsel will practice across the full range of higher education legal issues, with opportunities to build on existing relevant expertise and to develop additional practice areas. Success in the position will require the attorney to embrace and master new areas of law and professional challenges. Subject to the attorney's experience and interests, responsibilities may include leading significant transactions in contracts, construction, and real estate; advising Human Resources on employment and personnel issues; representing the institution in litigation; drafting university policies; assisting with complex regulatory compliance initiatives; managing sensitive open records requests; and responding to a wide range of other campus legal matters.
The Associate General Counsel must exercise good judgment in managing this workload and in navigating the varied relationships, stakeholders, and interests that exist on a college campus.
The Associate General Counsel will report to the General Counsel and join an Assistant General Counsel and an administrative assistant within the Office of Legal Affairs. This position initially will require in-person work on campus five days per week, with occasional remote work permitted. Over time, the position may be eligible for a hybrid-remote option. The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $125,000, commensurate with experience.

For best consideration, please apply on or before November 8, 2024.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess strong legal skills in core areas, including the following:

  • Demonstrated ability to produce well-crafted written work product;
  • Enthusiasm for analyzing complex problems and developing creative, practical solutions that account for legal and non-legal considerations;
  • Meticulous, detail-oriented approach to legal research;
  • Aptitude for building and maintaining positive, productive relationships with colleagues;
  • Integrity and mission-focused orientation; and
  • Professional and ethical handling of confidential, sensitive matters and difficult conversations with colleagues and outside parties.

Candidates must have a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and must either possess a license to practice law in Kentucky or obtain such license during the first year of employment. They should also have at least five years of quality legal experience.

Prior training in a sophisticated law firm or in-house environment would be ideal preparation for this position. All relevant practice areas will be considered, including general practices in litigation, transactions, and employment. Experience in higher education law and university clients is useful but not required.

To apply, provide a cover letter, resume, and two writing samples. Any de-identified work product is acceptable, including briefs and supporting memoranda, research memos, and contracts with your substantial authorship. References will be requested later in the process.
