POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the University of California (UC) Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice Provost (VP) is a senior academic leader in the UC Office of the President who is responsible for all programs within Faculty Affairs and Academic Programs, an organization with more than 190 FTE and an annual budget of $70M and plays a leadership role in overseeing Academic Personnel policies.

The Vice Provost works in partnership with the Deputy Provost of Systemwide Academic Personnel to ensure appropriate policies and guidelines are in place across the system for UC's 75,000+ academic appointees, which include ladder-rank and equivalent faculty, postdoctoral scholars, lecturers, academic researchers, librarians, faculty administrators, and other academic appointees, including graduate student teaching assistants and researchers. These policies range from tenure and promotion to academic freedom and beyond.

The Vice Provost is a key member of the UC System Provost and Executive Vice President's cabinet and works especially closely with the systemwide Academic Senate. The VP therefore needs to be keenly aware of faculty perspectives, fostering dialogue and policy development that expresses the most robust form of shared governance. The VP carefully reviews and provides advice to the UC Provost and Executive Vice President on personnel policies and procedures, compensation programs and studies, and other areas that impact faculty. In addition, the VP serves as a spokesperson to the Regents, the Legislature, and external organizations as needed.

The VP jointly convenes, with the Deputy Provost of Systemwide Academic Personnel, the Vice Provosts/Vice Chancellors of Academic Personnel from all campuses, working with them to support and enhance UC's unique approach to academic review, compensation, and advancement. The VP also co-leads systemwide Academic Senate-Administration workgroups and task forces related to faculty affairs and is integrally involved in the administration of faculty discipline cases.

The Vice Provost's responsibilities include oversight of several systemwide academic programs. The VP advocates within the Office of the President for the resources needed for the programs to thrive and reviews the performance of the program leaders, including the California Digital Library (CDL), the UC Press, the President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (PPFP), the UC Washington Center (UCDC), the UC Center in Sacramento, UCTV, the Education Abroad Program (EAP), and the Advancing Faculty Diversity (AFD) program. As part of the VP's responsibilities to the systemwide academic programs within the department, the VP serves on standing governing boards, councils, and committees for each of the programs. The VP also chairs ad-hoc working groups charged by the Provost that address signature issues for academic programs that require system wide expertise and senior leadership buy-in.

The position is a 100% appointment, full-time, fiscal year faculty administrator. The appointment is for a five-year renewable term. The appointee will retain a 0% faculty position on one of the UC campuses. If the candidate is not a current University of California full professor, they will be recommended for appointment as a faculty member at 0% time at a University of California campus, in accordance with the normal academic process.

This is a hybrid position reporting at least (3) days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) onsite in Oakland, CA. The candidate must also be available to travel periodically to UC campuses; to program locations, including Washington, DC.; and to various meeting locations throughout California.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Full professor, or academic credentials and scholarly distinction that would qualify the candidate to be appointable as a full professor who is a member of the UC Academic Senate.
  • Leadership experience in academic administration that may have been acquired in any of these roles: Vice Provost, Vice Chancellor, Dean, Chair, Associate Vice Provost, Associate Vice Chancellor, Associate Dean, Vice Chair; Academic Senate Chair, Vice Chair, or committee chair; PI on a multi-unit or multi-campus project; or other similar roles.
  • Track record of innovation in implementing solutions to complex problems.
  • Experience with academic personnel issues, including faculty recruitment, retention, advancement, diversity, compensation, data analysis, faculty code of conduct, academic freedom, and conflict of commitment.
  • Demonstrated experience and success with issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, including a commitment to promoting diversity and maintaining a workplace that is collaborative, supportive, respectful of differences, and committed to fairness and diversity in all interactions, both within and outside the team.
  • Ability to lead and delegate in an environment with multiple, often-competing priorities.
  • Superior oral and written communications skills, including experience with public speaking before a broad range of audiences to communicate and inform both internal and external audiences of key issues affecting the University.
  • Commitment to furthering the University's public interest, academic, and research missions.

Preferred qualities include the following:

  • Ability to manage a systemwide administrative office, including supervising staff at various levels with varying degrees of responsibility; managing budgets; building and fostering partnerships within Academic Affairs, across UCOP and the UC campuses; working with teams both small and large; and balancing campus autonomy and needs with systemwide priorities.
  • Experience with union-represented academic populations.

Salary and Benefits:

A reasonable estimate for this position is $350,000 to $380,000.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

About the Department of Faculty Affairs and Academic Programs

Faculty Affairs and Academic Programs (FAAP) supports the academic careers of UC's 75,000+ faculty and academic appointees by reviewing and consulting on all personnel policies and procedures impacting UC faculty across the system. Partnering with faculty, the Academic Senate, and academic administrators, FAAP leads development of new academic initiatives/ programs and designs and facilitates multi-campus collaborations.

The Vice Provost has oversight responsibility for several systemwide academic programs:

  • California Digital Library
  • UC Press
  • President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
  • UCTV

While most of these programs have their own leader, the VP acts as an advocate for the programs to ensure they continue to make valuable contributions to the research and teaching missions of the University. As part of the oversight of academic programs, the VP participates in the recruitment of new program leaders and reviews their performance on a regular basis. As part of the VP's responsibilities to the systemwide academic programs within the department, the VP serves as a member of the governing boards, councils, and committees for each of the programs. The VP also plays a critical role in representing the provost on a wide range of standing committees and councils that promote the mission and advance the strategic priorities of the university. In addition, the VP serves as a spokesperson to the Regents, the Legislature, and external organizations as needed.
