Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases

The Department of Pathobiological Sciences (PBS) in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for an Assistant Professor tenure-track faculty position in the field of infectious diseases of animals and humans.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an independent, extramurally funded, nationally recognized research program. Competitive candidates may have a research emphasis on bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, prion biology, virology, or immunology at any relevant scale, from molecules to populations. Competitive candidates will also study novel approaches to combatting infectious diseases that threaten both animals and humans. Minimum requirements include a PhD and at least 2 years of postdoctoral or equivalent experience in a relevant field.

In addition to developing a strong extramurally funded research program, the successful candidate is expected to make significant contributions to departmental and campus veterinary, undergraduate, graduate, and other professional teaching programs and to mentor graduate students. We seek individuals with the ability and commitment to mentor at-risk, first-generation, and/or underrepresented students to help them achieve success. Participation in departmental and university service and commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic environment are expected.

There are excellent opportunities for the new faculty member to benefit from existing departmental strengths in infectious disease, which emphasize contemporary and emerging diseases of importance to global animal and human health. The Department of Pathobiological Sciences is one of four departments within the School of Veterinary Medicine and consists of faculty members with expertise in infectious diseases (immunology, parasitology, bacteriology, virology, vector biology, epidemiology, and public health) and comparative pathology (anatomical and clinical). Faculty within the Department and School train graduate students in the Comparative Biomedical Sciences Training Program and other campus graduate programs. They also serve as trainers on a variety of NIH training grants administered through the School and other units on campus. Further, the new faculty member will have access to affiliated research and diagnostic facilities including the School of Medicine and Public Health, Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, Influenza Research Institute, Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector-borne Disease, Global Health Institute, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, USGS National Wildlife Health Center, Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, and Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

The School of Veterinary Medicine makes a strong 12-month salary commitment to its faculty. Salary and a start-up package will be commensurate with the rank and experience of the successful candidate.

The candidate will participate in the School of Veterinary Medicine's research, teaching, and service programs. Specifically, the individual will be expected to conduct independent extramurally funded research in an area related to infectious diseases of animals and humans; participate in courses for veterinary medical, undergraduate, or graduate students in relevant disciplines; train graduate students; and provide academic service to the Department, School of Veterinary Medicine, and University. The individual will also be expected to interact with faculty across campus in relevant disciplines.

The approximate distribution of effort will be 70% research, 20% teaching, 10% academic service. Individuals with NIH K awards will commit 75% research effort during the award period.
