Medical Technologist I - Bacteriology (CVM)

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Med Tech I to join the Bacteriology team at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center. The Medical Technologist utilizes their attention to quality and knowledge of scientific processes to perform high level microbiology testing procedures to meet client needs. This person is extremely reliable, flexible in dealing with unpredictable workloads and work schedules, and has exemplary time management skills. Their positive attitude allows them to effectively communicate under pressure to support unit initiatives in a collaborative, team-based environment.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform a comprehensive range of microbiology testing within the unit on a rotational basis
  • Receive, evaluate and sort submitted specimens according to established protocols; create unique case accessions
  • Process specimens for diagnostic testing; inoculate to appropriate medias
  • Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot lab equipment and instrumentation
  • Provide support to uphold the Quality Assurance system
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives
  • Assist with the training and support of technical staff
  • Other duties as requested

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field with up to two years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficient with various basic software applications with the ability to learn new software quickly (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Ability to perform laboratory procedures and record keeping with accuracy, precision, and efficiency
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent self-management practices to successfully oversee and organize competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretion
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time at benches, computers, biological safety cabinets or while using laboratory equipment or instrumentation

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related field
  • Experience working in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory or a clinical laboratory setting
  • Experience handling infectious organisms
  • Experience using laboratory information systems (LIMS)
  • Self-motivated with a high level of initiative to continue learning
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

This position is 39 hours per week. While normal business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, specific schedules may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, University holidays and scheduled breaks. Additionally, members of this team are required to work Saturdays on a rotating basis. As such, weekend work on Saturdays will be required for this position.

The Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is a high visibility and high-volume veterinary diagnostic laboratory that promotes the health, productivity, and welfare of food-and fiber-producing animals, companion animals, and zoo and wildlife populations. Through its comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services, the AHDC detects animal diseases and supports animal and public health, promotes environmental stewardship, and fosters economic growth.

The Bacteriology laboratory resides within the Animal Health Diagnostic Center and provides high quality, detailed, and complete diagnostic testing services to veterinary clients and agricultural producers, in addition to contributing to the education of undergraduate and graduate students.
