SUMMARY

You will work as an engineering or materials science intern in the Ansys Mechanical business, contributing to the development and release of our Ansys Sherlock electronics reliability product. The Ansys Sherlock tool allows users to make reliability predictions for a PCBA design using their design files and drawing from the reliability, materials, and part models and databases in the software. This role will support the Ansys Sherlock R&D team as they continue to expand the scope of the tool, in this case the number of different solder alloys able to be used in reliability predictions. You will have the opportunity to work with product managers, development teams, and be mentored by lead engineers at the Ansys RES (Reliability Engineering Services) group with deep technical expertise and industry experience in electronics reliability.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Become familiar with the Ansys Sherlock tool, including model inputs, reliability predictions, and the physics of failure theory built underlying reliability calculations
  • Work with the Ansys Sherlock product manager and development team to prioritize solder alloy candidates based on industry trends and user feedback
  • Conduct literature reviews of published studies of alloys identified, gathering required inputs for new Ansys Sherlock solder models
  • Identify gaps in publicly available information for new solder alloys, and work with your Ansys mentor and colleagues to establish next steps for gathering required information through internal testing

  • Pursuing BS or MS in any field related to Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Parts Reliability, or Electronic Products and Systems, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher

    • Must be currently enrolled in a full-time degree program and returning to the program after thecompletion of the internship

  • Knowledge and interest in electronic parts and solder joint reliability

    • Accelerated life testing
    • Mechanical characterization testing (shear, tensile, fatigue, CTE)
    • Failure modes of electronic component interconnects

  • Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis, familiarity with Ansys Mechanical
  • Collaborative, responsible, self-motivated.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience performing mechanical testing of metal alloys
  • Experience performing and analyzing results of accelerated life testing of electronics (drop testing, vibration exposure, thermal cycling)
