The Position

This position assists the Advising Management Team with the implementation of academic advising and career services to both traditional and e-learning students, and guides students toward graduation, transfer to a four-year institutions or entry into the workforce. This position also assists in College initiatives designed to increase retention and completion rates.

Classification: Non-Affiliated Administrator

Staff Duration: Full Time 12 months


What You Will Do

1. Advises and assists on-campus and e-learning students, both in-person and via virtual advising, in the selection of a degree program, course selection and registration, and successful completion of degree/program requirements.

2. Provides holistic advising for students, guiding students throughout their time at the College; assists students in exploring options, setting goals, and creating a plan to achieve desired outcomes; communicates proactively with students throughout all phases of the student experience.

3. Develops knowledge of and adheres to College policies and procedures that relate to degree requirements, courses, course selection, scheduling, pre-registration and registration, and college admission

4. Advises students transferring to four-year institutions, including educating students on the NJ Statewide Transfer Agreement, tools such as NJ Transfer, and the transfer process.

5. Maintains working knowledge of services offered by College personnel and departments, and assists students in fully utilizing all the resources available to them at the College.

6. Assists with the planning and execution of special events, such as Open House, Information Sessions and Transfer Activities.

7. Participates in group and individual advising for new students, including freshmen and students transferring to OCC.

8. Participates in NACADA events and other professional development opportunities which encourage continuous professional growth and development as an Advisor

9. Serves on campus committees as required

10. Performs other duties as assigned


The Successful Candidate Must Have

1. Bachelor's Degree

2. Two years of directly related experience in a student services, teaching or counseling area of an educational environment that required excellent interpersonal and student service skills

3. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite; ability to create standard documents and reports and well as prior database experience

4. Ability to meet flexible work schedule requirements that include evenings and weekend hours in accordance with departmental needs.


Even Better If You Have

1. Master's Degree

2. Two or more years of experience advising students at the college level
