Job Duties
Our 9 hospital non-profit, public university-associated healthcare system (in partnership with several large Federally Qualified Health Center ( FQHC) systems) located in eastern North Carolina is seeking Family Medicine Residency Faculty Physicians for its rural family medicine residency training program.
Our nationally recognized unopposed rural residency program offers the best of both worlds to residents and faculty alike. Accredited in 2021, this program is comprised of three rural sites with 27 resident positions. This 1-2 rural program has partnered with multiple regional FQHC's to create unique community-based training opportunities in a public university-affiliated program. During PGY1, rural residents spend the majority of their time training at a large tertiary academic medical center with over 1,000 beds and a catchment area serving approximately 1.5 million people. These PGY1 residents also spend 1 day weekly at their assigned rural FQHC for continuity clinic. During PGY2 and PGY3, these rural residents spend the majority of their time training at the rural community to which they are assigned, which includes training time in their rural FQHC continuity clinic as well as training in small rural community hospitals and rural community subspecialty clinics. There are three rural training sites offered in this program: Ahoskie, NC (Town of ~5K people, 114 bed rural community hospital, busy FQHC continuity clinic); Duplin, NC (Town of ~3K people, 81 bed rural community hospital, busy FQHC continuity clinic); and Roanoke Rapids, NC (Town of ~15K people, 204 bed rural community hospital, busy FQHC continuity clinic). Travel between the urban academic center and each rural site is approximately 1-1.5 hours. Travel expenses to and from rural sites are reimbursed by the department.
These faculty positions would require commitment to training standard program residents and rural program residents in the urban and rural environments. The majority of time will be spent at the urban center of Greenville, NC. Faculty will have precepting, inpatient and outpatient clinical responsibilities, administrative, and didactic responsibilities at the urban site. Approximately 1-2 days per week would be spent at one of the three rural sites listed above. All work at rural sites will be precepting in the rural continuity clinic and didactic/administrative roles, and each rural site has 9 assigned residents. The flexible structure of this new rural family medicine program provides an opportunity to enhance an array of special interests, including evidence-based medicine, PI/QI, underserved populations, procedures, geriatrics, women's health, pediatrics, international missions, physician leadership, and more. We are seeking candidates with passion and enthusiasm for teaching full-scope family medicine in both urban and rural environments. There are opportunities for leadership and professional growth/development. Hours are typically M-F 8-5pm and call (nights and weekends) rotates amongst faculty members and community adjunct faculty call partners.
