The University

Sonoma State University's beautiful 274-acre campus is located in Sonoma County wine country, an hour north of San Francisco. The Department

The Department of Geography, Environment, and Planning provides a rigorous education leading alternatively to a B.A. or to a B.S. degree. The Department emphasizes high-quality undergraduate teaching, advising, scholarship, and service to the community and the university. Committed to the recognition of individuality and unique accomplishment, faculty work closely with students to encourage personal direction and ideas. We strive to create a diverse and inclusive faculty serving an increasingly diverse student body. Much of our curriculum helps students develop a holistic understanding of environmental systems and socio-natural inter-relationships which allows them to critically address environmental and social justice in a variety of contexts. With approximately 150 majors, the Department is located within the School of Social Sciences. Currently the Department consists of six full-time permanent faculty members as well as several part-time instructors.

Duties of the Position

The Geography, Environment, and Planning Department at Sonoma State University seeks qualified applicants to teach a wide variety of courses. We have areas of concentration focused upon

- society, environment, and development

- environmental management and policy

- environmental systems

- energy and sustainability

- urban studies and planning

- geospatial science

Professional Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:

Upper division courses: PhD (or near completion) or terminal degree as appropriate; Lower division: Masters; Lab sections: Bachelors with appropriate experience. We have no minimum required teaching experience. However, teaching experience and evidence of classroom success are important criteria for consideration

Rank and Salary

Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.
  • Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
  • The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
  • Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
  • Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
  • Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.

  • Temporary Faculty with three-year contracts do not need to reapply.
  • Temporary Faculty who had a paid appointment during the prior academic year with your department (either one or both semesters); this includes Lecturers on the Re-Employment list are not required to apply through the Recruitment Pool unless they would like to be evaluated to teach additional courses, not currently designated as qualified to teach.
