JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Behrend seeks an outstanding leader in biomedical research to serve as Director of its new Biomedical Translational Research Center.The center is a partnership with the Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI) which has an established satellite location in Erie, PA, in conjunction with UPMC.The research center is currently funded by $10 million in endowments with plans to grow this support. This position reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies and is expected to perform duties in both administrative and research capacities.This is a 2 year initial research faculty appointment with excellent possibility of renewal.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the operation and development of the Biomedical Translational Research Center at Penn State Behrend in accordance with founded mission and vison.
  • Establishing annual plans and rolling 3-year strategic plans for the center.
  • Work closely with partners at the Magee-Womens Research Institute to identify, launch and support joint research through seed grants, seminars and other collaborative activities to advance faculty and student research.
  • Develop opportunities to collaborate with Penn State Behrend, University-wide research centers, and faculty in the center's strategic research areas of: basic and translational research on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease; polymer/biological engineering for implants and drug delivery; applied behavioral and social sciences; and other related areas
  • Lead engagement with Penn State's College of Medicine.
  • Work with the campus leadership to raise philanthropic gifts to fund the center endowment.
  • Seek and secure external sponsorship to support research and to support growth of the center.
  • Establish future years of Center budget and oversees expenditures in compliance with Penn State policies.
  • Manage the research facilities dedicated to the center and plan facility expansion and equipment procurement as needed.
  • Hire staff as appropriate and within budget.
  • Mentor faculty affiliated with the center.
  • Serves as the point of contact of the center for both internal and external stakeholders

Qualifications:

Must have Ph.D and /or M.D. by time of appointment with strong emphasis in biomedical research and/or clinical practice.Must possess qualifications to be appointed as a research faculty member, which includes:demonstrated ability as a researcher and evidence of professional growth and scholarship in discipline.Preferred qualifications include experience establishing an academic center and significant involvement in biomedical research (minimum of 5 years).Evidence of strong commitment to improving women's health through basic and applied clinical research is desired.
