Job Summary

The Senior Audio Visual (AV) Services Engineer leads the strategic design, implementation, and maintenance of UCSF's AV systems and infrastructure and provides expertise in engineering and technical skills required to ensure seamless operation of AV infrastructure. The Senior AV Services Engineer is responsible for initiating and leading a range of complex AV projects, including customer and stakeholder engagement, documentation, design, and final installation. The Senior AV Services Engineer provides senior technical guidance and training to both the AV Services team and to other Infrastructure Services teams, ensuring adherence to industry best practices in all technology-related procedures. The Senior AV Services Engineer will make recommendations on project planning, system design, and installation, and stay abreast with emerging technologies and regulatory requirements to drive continuous innovation. The Senior AV Services Engineer will also provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers on the team.

This role involves applying user-centered design processes, industry standards, engineering, and best practices to create, evaluate and modify designs and prototypes in support of AV systems design. Creates plans and specifications for highly detailed, complex AV IT projects based on customers' needs aligning design with codes, regulations, and AV IT engineering best practices. Communicates to customer and monitors projects. Creates documentation and specifications for third party installation teams and verifies installation work. Coordinates with other construction engineering teams. Participates in building meetings and coordinates inspections.

The Senior AV Services Engineer will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across customers and stakeholders. This role will execute UCSF's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $75,700 - $160,500 (Annual Rate).

The Digital Workplace Services team within Infrastructure Services is responsible for managing and maintaining UCSF's integrated communications, collaboration, and AV systems. This encompasses a wide array of technologies such as telephony voicemail, AV technology, video conferencing, and collaboration platforms. The department ensures seamless connectivity and efficient communication across various departments, supporting the institution's mission of providing high-quality healthcare, education, and research. The team plays a crucial role in implementing and optimizing digital workplace solutions to meet the diverse needs of faculty, clinicians, staff, and students, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency and collaboration within UCSF.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of experience/training in one or more of the following fields: information technology, computer science, public administration, business administration, communications.
  • 5 to 7+ years of experience working in one or more of the following fields: AV technology, unified communications, information technology or network operations.
    Advanced knowledge of AV technologies, including understanding of audio/video signal flow, AV equipment functionality, audio, video and communications circuitry, AV IT control systems, and industry standards. Advanced knowledge in creating detailed schematics, AV flow diagrams, AV infrastructure drawings, equipment layouts, and system diagrams.
  • Proven experience managing phases of AV projects including obtaining scope, budget, planning, design, bid preparation, installation, inspection, testing, and final walk through. Ability to test and operate installed AV IT equipment. Strong project management skills needed to assume responsibility for accomplishment of project objectives.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to uncover root of difficult problems and scope solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines as well as awareness of vision and strategy. Seeks information from multiple and diverse sources to inform solutions. Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity.
  • Proficiency in AV integration principles including knowledge of AV
  • In-depth understanding of networking concepts and protocols relevant to AV systems, such as IP addressing, VLANs, and streaming protocols.
  • In-depth understanding of applicable codes and regulations. Thorough knowledge of relevant software and tools used in AV design and engineering, such as CAD software, AV control systems, and DSP programming platforms.
  • Advanced knowledge of audio, video, and control systems as well as architectural and cabling requirements. Knowledge of electronics theory with emphasis on audio, video, and communications circuitry, AV IT control systems and signal flow, and acoustic design theory.
  • Strong technical skills in configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining AV systems and equipment.
  • Strong creativity and problem-solving abilities to quickly identify and resolve technical issues encountered during AV system deployment and operation.
  • Analytical skills to assess AV requirements, evaluate technical solutions, and make informed recommendations.
  • Advanced knowledge of AV technologies, including understanding of audio/video signal flow, AV equipment functionality, audio, video and communications circuitry, AV IT control systems, and industry standards. Advanced knowledge in creating detailed schematics, AV flow diagrams, AV infrastructure drawings, equipment layouts, and system diagrams.
  • Ability to present technical concepts and solutions to diverse audiences including non-technical stakeholders and business executives in clear, concise, and business-friendly terms, highlighting the strategic value of AV initiatives.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adapt to evolving priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to foster positive working relationships and cultivate a strong rapport with colleagues, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience developing and nurturing collaborative working relationships within a diverse team environment, fostering a culture of innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic, medical, and research and administrative functions of a large public university.
