Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Technician within Molecular Biology & Biochemistry at the Rutgers Cancer Institute.

Under direction, the Laboratory Technician performs and assists with technical laboratory procedures and analyses in support of specialized research activities of the laboratory, including working with mice. The Laboratory Technician also assists in the set-up, and conducting of experiments and performs other related laboratory duties as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Assists in packing, unpacking, storing, and classification of lab supplies and specimens.
  • Performs standard laboratory procedures involved in making required tests and analyses.
  • Assists in preparing culture media, reagents, stains, and stock solutions.
  • Assists with experimentation and research activities, including working with mice.
  • Assists with the maintenance of the Laboratory facilities, equipment, and instruments.
  • Maintains accurate records of experimentation and research.
  • Reviews selected literature relevant to research activities.
  • Prepares reports, documents, and databases.
  • Helps maintain records, files, and databases.
  • May give suitable instructions to other non-professional workers.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Associate Degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Medicine or a related Life Sciences field is required.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong oral and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative, yet seek supervision as appropriate.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior research experience preferred.
  • Experimental skills in cell culture and animal work preferred.
  • Knowledge in biochemistry and metabolism as asset.

Physical Demands and Work Environment


  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs. hand coordination and dexterity to perform lab bench tasks, surgeries and dissections on mice, similar other physical demands in lab work and mouse care

  • WORK ENVIRONMENT: Lab environment with moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
