The Role:

The Director, Clinical Operations provides ongoing leadership and operational oversight of 12-14 geographically diverse, multispecialty clinics with ancillary services within the Providence Physician Division (PPD).

This role is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of management and patient care systems to ensure cost-effective, high-quality operations in an environment of significant growth and continuous change.

The Director leads managers and staff in coordinating care delivery and applying clinical best practices to ensure timely access to services that are responsive to the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of patients.

This leader oversees development of 1-2 new clinic locations annually and advises senior physician division leadership on administrative and operational matters. The Director partners closely with Regional Medical Directors on physician performance and operational alignment and represents the Physician Division in building strategic internal and external partnerships.

Major Challenges



  • Supporting provider practices with varying cultures and practice styles
  • Managing highly visible and sometimes controversial projects and programs
  • Standardizing policies and procedures across multiple clinic locations
  • Ensuring growth, stability, and financial stewardship in a resource-constrained environment
  • Balancing competing stakeholder priorities across clinical, operational, and administrative groups
  • Maintaining presence across geographically dispersed clinics (up to 70 miles apart)
  • Driving patient, provider, and employee satisfaction simultaneously


Scope of Responsibility



  • Annual expense budget: $50-100M
  • Annual patient encounters: 300,000-350,000
  • Support staff (FTEs): 300+ Physicians: 80-100 across multispecialty practices


What You'll Do:

Clinical Operations Leadership



  • Provide overall leadership and direction to multiple clinics within the designated region
  • Ensure high-quality, cost-effective operations across all clinic locations
  • Lead managers and staff in coordinating care delivery and operational execution


Strategy, Growth & Program Development



  • Lead development of new clinic locations (1-2 annually), including operational setup and workflow design
  • Support strategic planning, service line growth, and business development across specialties
  • Participate in PPD-wide initiatives, committees, and task forces


Financial & Operational Performance



  • Develop and manage clinic budgets, including revenue, payor mix, productivity, and expenses
  • Support Clinic Managers in meeting budget, quality, and productivity targets
  • Participate in capital, space, and operational planning


Physician Partnership & Clinical Alignment



  • Partner with Regional Medical Directors on physician performance and clinical operations
  • Advise leadership on clinical and professional matters affecting clinic operations
  • Foster strong physician and provider relationships across the organization


Standardization & Process Improvement



  • Identify and implement standardized policies, procedures, and operational practices
  • Drive continuous improvement and operational efficiencies across clinic locations
  • Assess clinic operations regularly to improve cost and performance outcomes


Workforce Leadership & Development



  • Hire, train, develop, and evaluate Clinic Managers
  • Support workforce planning and recruitment of skilled personnel
  • Build a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement


Patient Experience & Access



  • Ensure timely access to care and high-quality patient experience
  • Support development of patient and provider satisfaction metrics and improvement plans
  • Create a patient-centered, customer-focused environment


Training, Systems & Program Implementation



  • Oversee development of training and development programs for clinic staff
  • Develop processes for launching new clinics, including staffing, workflows, and communication plans
  • Ensure alignment with mission and organizational values across all clinic operations


Advanced Responsibilities (as applicable)



  • Lea d development of multi-year growth plans for specialty service portfolios
  • Drive business development, acquisitions, and expansion of clinic sites
  • Collaborate with acute care leaders to support downstream hospital growth
  • Lead program development including telehealth, innovation, research, and foundation initiatives


What You'll Bring:

Education & Credentials



  • Bachelor's Degree (preferably in Business or Healthcare-related field)
  • Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration or Business Administration (preferred)


Experience & Expertise



  • 5 years of experience in medical group management or healthcare operations at a senior level, preferably in a large, matrixed, multi-site organization
  • Experience in:

  • Experience working directly with physicians and healthcare leadership teams

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.

Therefore, leaders applying for this role will be required to work a hybrid schedule, which consists of three days onsite, two days remote and live within a reasonable commuting distance to the ministry or service area they support and lead.
