About the Job

Overview

The University of Minnesota Libraries seeks an individual as a Project Manager within the Northwest Architectural Archives to focus on assessing and preparing unprocessed collections for collection move and direct processing activities to make those collections accessible. Will collaborate with ASC staff regarding the move itself: logistics and locations. Will have the expertise to step in when needed to assist in unit work.

This is a 12-month temporary appointment.

This position will require work to be done primarily on-site in Elmer L. Andersen Library, and occasionally at our off-site storage locations.

Responsibilities

The Project Manager will assess off-site collections, create processing plans (rapid), process and direct staff/students in the effort. Collection move logistics planning requires a detailed workflow that is also adaptable to work through a specific timeline of delivery and shelving from off-site storage to Andersen Library's underground storage. The Project Manager will collaborate with the committee coordinating the move. The Project Manager will work with considerable independence to organize and describe records following departmental specifications and professional standards. The Project Manager will process and guide staff in the same, employ "rapid archiving" to prepare materials for the move. Time estimates will fluctuate with the stages of the project: assessment; execution, and the subsequent transfer of materials to a permanent location.

Project Management 50%

  • Assess unprocessed or off-site architectural collections; create a processing plan for each.
  • Create detailed workflows including location logistics, identify preservation needs, and direct NAA staff in that work.
  • Collaborate with Curator/ the Archives and Special Collections staff, and the ability to work with independence.

Archival Processing 50%

  • Organize and sequence items physically and intellectually.
  • Describe the collection through analyzing, organizing, and recording details about the collection, such as creator, title, location, dates, extent, and contents.
  • Describe series arrangement, scope and content, and conduct historical research as needed.
  • Inventory and identify project jobs and drawings.
  • Publish a collection guide to aid in the discoverability of the archival materials using the ArchivesSpace collection management tool.
  • Re-house materials as appropriate.
  • Identify preservation issues.
  • Identify items for digitization.
Qualifications

Required:

  • BA/BS degree plus at least two years of experience or a combination of education and experience to equal at least six years.
  • Demonstrated understanding of archival professional standards and procedures.
  • Previous archival processing experience.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated ability to use spreadsheets to track and analyze data.
  • Fluent working knowledge of ArchiveSpace platform.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
About the Department

Archives and Special Collections ("ASC") is home to the University of Minnesota's collections of rare books, personal papers and organizational archives. Materials in ASC, often called Primary Sources, include letters, diaries, organizational and business records, drafts of literary works, drawings, artifacts, maps, posters, old or rare books, photographs, architectural plans, audio visual recordings, and electronic records, to name just a few. Archives and Special Collections is composed of sixteen individual Archive Units and libraries each focusing on a specific subject area.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $27.29

Time Appointment: 100% (40 hours/week) Appointment; Temporary
