About the Role

The Anchorage Maintenance & Facilities Assistant Manager position is responsible for managing and directing maintenance and facilities personnel in support of terminal operations. This individual will ensure the maintenance and facilities department is providing container handling equipment, containers, light service vehicles, tractors, forklifts, and chassis in good working condition, as well attend to any facility maintenance improvements and/or repairs. Responsibilities also include controlling labor and material repair costs and maintaining the safety, security, and morale of maintenance and facilities personnel.

What you'll do:

  • Directs work assignments and oversees maintenance and facilities personnel to make sure prompt service is provided to meet operational requirements and ensures compliance with established maintenance, repair, and quality control procedures.
  • Communicates and coordinates staffing and equipment requirements with attention to the established fiscal year operating plan goals.
  • Responsible for attendance tracking, reviewing, and approving timecards. Approves employee pay rate changes according to CBA.
  • Performs audits and ensures compliance with company policy and collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
  • Schedules and coordinates facility repairs and modifications.
  • Understands the CBA. Acts to provide consistent, fair, and impartial disciplinary actions along with clear communications as warranted to the Business Agent and Shop Steward.
  • Continuously monitors the work area to ensure compliance with company, state, and federal regulations in order to maintain productivity, safety, security, and quality workmanship.
  • Works with Safety, Quality, Environmental & Security (SQES) Manager and investigates incidents involving damage or injury and prepares accurate and informative accident reports to comply with safety and damage prevention programs.
  • Understands and uses Matson's computer systems to ensure accurate information is obtained from and transferred to the databases for efficient equipment maintenance and cost controls.
  • Directly supports Kodiak and Dutch Harbor maintenance operation as directed by Alaska Crane, Maintenance and Facilities Manager. Including periodic site visits.
  • Evaluates and approves changes to the parts inventory to ensure repairs and maintenance are executed in an optimal and efficient manner to avoid any delays.
  • Performs special assignments as directed by the Anchorage Cranes, Maintenance & Facilities Manager.
  • Utilizes the Maintenance Management System to monitor and audit regulatory preventative maintenance requirements and inventory inclusive of adding or removing personnel, equipment, and programs for maintenance.
  • Coordinates and conducts the hiring process for the maintenance and facilities department.
  • Approves and tracks high dollar cost equipment repairs. Approves initiation of equipment disposal process via the Material Disposition Authorization (MDA) system.
  • Generates annual budget for review by Anchorage Cranes, Maintenance and Facilities Manager and accounting department to establish annual budget and capital purchases. Utilizes "Budget vs. Actual" reports from the Maintenance Management System to monitor labor and material expenses. Loads budget into the Maintenance Management System and runs period reports for all Alaska locations.
  • Directly responsible for researching and drafting Capital Expenditure Requests (CER) for the purchase of new equipment and facility upgrades as directed by the Manager.
  • Approves material requisitions through Workday system.
  • Participate in internal/external audit reviews and provide corrective actions as needed.
  • Represent Anchorage Facilities and Maintenance department in all HAZMAT/International Organization for Standardization (ISO) meetings and Terminal Safety Meetings.
  • Oversees Gatehouse, Maintenance, and Marine sections while executing periodic weekend Terminal Manager duties.
  • Coordinates with local agents and customers for prioritizing loads, Gatehouse staffing, and operational hours for efficient vessel operations.

You have these skills:

And these qualifications:

  • Must demonstrate computer proficiency, specifically Microsoft Word and Excel, and Matson's equipment database.
  • Knowledge of automotive, heavy equipment, welding, and refrigeration repairs.
  • Knowledge of facilities maintenance.
  • College degree preferred or equivalent technical education.
  • Five years' supervisory experience.
  • Five plus years of power equipment and facilities maintenance experience required.
  • Must have current driver's license to operate company-owned vehicles.
  • This position may require travel, along with working in a shop and warehouse environment.
  • The work environment is occasionally outside in all types of weather.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) card.
  • Must be flexible to work and support a 24-hour operation to include working holidays, nights, and weekends as needed.

Extra credit if you have:

  • Experience managing a union workforce is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sit up to 15 minutes per hour.
  • Walk up to 25 minutes per hour.
  • Stand up to 20 minutes per hour.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. - Occasionally.
  • Other - Climb ladders and gangways. Work in all types of weather conditions.
