Research Ecologist - Assoc. Project Scientist (2 Positions)

NATURE AND PURPOSE

The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

I. RESEARCH (85%)

Research activity (70%)

A. Assist in leading a multi-campus collaborative effort to develop and implement science that helps guide federal, state, and local landowners and managers in planning for more resilient and adaptable coastal habitats; assist in informing the impacts or benefits needed to maintain ecosystem values; and provide methods and tools that identify and help landowners and regulators improve the restoration needed to off-set anthropogenic impacts in coastal environments. Link large-scale drivers (sea-level rise, climate change) with fine-scale ecological/geomorphic processes (sediment flux, vegetation dynamics) which is critical for understanding vulnerability and adaptation pathways.

B. Assist in evaluating flooding impacts from climate change including storms and sea-level rise on coastal ecosystems, including tidal wetlands, mangroves, and seagrass. Examine how macroscale drivers (e.g., climate change, sea-level rise) interact with local processes (e.g., sediment supply, vegetation, elevation change) to determine coastal ecosystem resilience or vulnerability within a changing climate. Results are critical for supporting conservation and management efforts in the coastal zone to prevent ecosystem and species loss.

C. Assist in advancing the field of wetland ecology and coastal ecosystems within a changing environment and management landscape. Including understanding ecological processes for marsh, mangrove, and seagrass restoration to inform management in the California, U.S., and South Pacific islands. Studies designed to quantify how wetlands (plants, biogeomorphic processes) respond to changing weather, flooding conditions, salinity, drought, and human interactions.

Publication (5%)

The candidate will publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, books, and other outlets either independently or in collaboration with the Pl or other members of the research team.

Grant Acquisition (10%)

The candidate will assist in acquiring proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. The candidate will interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY(10%)

The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and give research presentations at national and international scientific meetings. When appropriate, the candidate may be requested to coordinate seminars and laboratory meetings.

Ill. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)

The candidate will engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to stakeholders and the general public as well as providing technical advice in the candidate's area of expertise to individuals, public agencies, and NGOs. The candidate will engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service. Teaching full classroom courses is not an expectation of this position.

1. Ph.D degree in ecology, fisheries, hydrology, biology, or related fields, or technical expertise equivalent to a Master's degree in the area of specialization or five years of training in the area of specialization
2. Current California Driver's License
3. Experience managing a team in a scientific setting as well manage a team off site in a remote location
4. Knowledge in restoring seagrass beds
5. Ability to analyze remote sensed aerial and satellite imagery
6. Perform advanced statistical analyses in R and/or work with spatial data in Arc GIS
7. Comfort working in remote locations
8. Ability to pass UCD boat safety training course at Bodega Marine Lab and to plan, lead, and pilot boat-based field projects. Ability to bend, squat, crouching and to pull and lift up to 50 pounds of survey nets and similar field equipment repetitively during field sampling days of 8-10 hours duration in weather conditions spanning from cold winter rains to very hot summer days. Ability to work independently and remain focused for long periods of time while conducting procedures in laboratory or in the field

1. The candidate must have experience working in coastal and wetland ecosystems
2. The candidate must be able to demonstrate that they are legally authorized to work in the United States. The University will not offer sponsorship of a visa for this position

1. 1-3 years of postdoctoral or equivalent experience
2. Record of productivity with publications in peer-reviewed journals.
3. Knowledge of basic soil and wetland chemistry
4. Proficiency in snorkeling, diving and boating.
5. Leadership abilities to be able to mentor and lead research assistants and other support staff
6. Comfort with international travel including long field expeditions.
