Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of City and Regional Planning is an academic unit within the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department engages in teaching, primarily at the graduate level; conducts applied research on urban and regional issues; and serves the state, nation, and planning profession. The department offers a Masters in City and Regional Planning, a PhD, and an undergraduate minor. In any given year there are about 85 Masters students enrolled, 35 doctoral students and a growing cadre of undergraduates and students enrolled in dual degree programs. The faculty consists of 18 core faculty consisting of tenure-track faculty members and full-time teaching faculty along with part-time practitioners and researchers all of whom are active in the teaching and research programs of the department. The faculty usually generates over $3.0 million annually through research and training grants.
Position Summary
The Research Specialist will provide technical assistance for the Bragtown Small Area Plan by supporting data collection, policy analysis, and community-engaged planning activities related to land use, transportation, housing, and neighborhood revitalization and will contribute to background research, map existing conditions, summarize stakeholder and resident input, and assist with translating planning goals into actionable recommendations for implementation. The position will also assist with preparation of presentation materials, technical memos, and draft plan content, while coordinating with public agencies, community partners, and project team members to ensure the planning process was analytically rigorous, responsive to local priorities, and aligned with broader city planning objectives.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Management Preferences
-Foundational understanding of urban planning concepts, including land use, transportation, housing, and community development
-Ability to support data collection, background research, or policy review
-Basic experience with mapping or spatial analysis tools (e.g., GIS) or willingness to learn
-Strong written communication skills
-Experience in City and Regional Planning
