| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Research in Black Cultures and Histories (Stone Center) was founded in 1988. The Stone Center honors and is named for Dr. Sonja Haynes Stone, a visionary and key figure in the development of African American studies at
UNC at Chapel Hill. The Stone Center was followed by the creation of the Institute of African American Research in 1995 and, in 2021, these two units joined and now operate as one of the University's 13 Academic and Community Engagement Centers (
ACE). As an
ACE unit the Stone Center develops interdepartmental academic opportunities for faculty and student research and scholarship, arts and cultural programming of the highest quality, and community engagement programs in support of the University's commitment to service and outreach.
The Stone Center encourages a critical approach to intellectual inquiry, supports principled scholarship and encourages collaboration and engagement with audiences on and beyond the
UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The Center collaborates with local, statewide, and national partners and other organizations that are committed to research, cultural and historical explorations, and community engagement. The Stone Center provides direct and indirect support for established and emerging scholar/researchers and for artists and innovators who are engaged in direct, hands-on interactions with audiences. The Stone Center provides extensive support for students interested in exploration of African American and diaspora arts, cultures, and histories. The Director will lead in articulating an intellectual vision for the Stone Center under its new organizational structure that will allow it to be more effective and efficient in fulfilling its mission and the strategic goals of the University. |
