Medical Assistant - Co-Worker Health
Hours: 40 hours per week (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) Location: Co-Worker Health, Mercy St. Louis
Position Overview
The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a vital role in supporting providers by delivering high-quality direct and indirect patient care in a medical office setting. This role contributes to efficient clinic operations by assisting with clinical procedures, maintaining accurate documentation, and providing administrative support. Medical Assistants work within their defined scope of practice based on clinic type (Hospital Outpatient Department or clinic), under appropriate supervision, and in alignment with Mercy's mission, values, and standards of care.
Job Responsibilities
- Greet patients, escort them to exam rooms, and obtain vital signs
- Primary Care only: Complete Advanced Standard Rooming
- Collect, review, and update patient medical and medication histories
- Prepare patients for examinations and assist providers during exams and procedures
- Perform basic diagnostic testing (e.g., urine dipstick, glucose testing, EKGs) based on demonstrated competency
- Document patient care accurately and in a timely manner
- Reinforce patient education as directed by the provider or nurse
- Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms and ensure adequate medical supplies
- Assist with scheduling diagnostic tests, specialty referrals, and follow-up appointments
- Provide front office support, including answering phones, patient check-in/check-out, and managing faxes and scanned documents
- Participate in staff meetings and quality improvement initiatives
- Comply with all infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory policies and procedures
- Perform additional duties as assigned within the Medical Assistant scope of practice, based on office type (HOD or clinic), and in accordance with policies and state regulations (e.g., vaccinations)
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of MA Clinic Academy training required for new hires
Additional Requirement (Hospital Outpatient Departments only)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Preferred Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program
Experience
- One year of experience in an outpatient or ambulatory care setting
Certification(s):
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and clinical documentation
- Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment
- Knowledge of common outpatient procedures and clinical equipment

- Demonstrates awareness of and respect for diverse populations and behaviors
Work Environment
- Outpatient clinical setting with frequent patient interaction
- Requires standing, walking, lifting, and use of clinical equipment
- Potential exposure to infectious materials; personal protective equipment (PPE) provided
Physical Requirements
- Ability to push, pull, and/or lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
- Prolonged standing and walking throughout the workday
- Ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform job duties
