Position Summary POSITION SUMMARY Designs fixtures and tools for industrial machinery and equipment required for production and test processes. Evaluates factors such as quality, accessibility, economy, mobility, and performance requirements to support efficient production and reduce manufacturing costs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Designs mill, lathe, holding fixtures and tools for assembly, test, and production processes by evaluating product specifications, engineering blueprints, tool orders, and shop data. 2. Confers with engineering, shop personnel, and senior designers to resolve tooling design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost. 3. Analyzes part drawing and manufacturing planning to assist in the design of adequate tooling and production equipment. 4. Draws preliminary sketches and prepares layouts and detailed drawings utilizing computer aided drawing software for tools, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and machine attachments. 5. Selects standard items and materials (such as bushings and tool bits) to incorporate into tool design as well as off-the-shelf components to assure cost effectiveness and optimum performance. Assists in the preparation of estimates of production tooling for new and mature programs. 6. May define or input parameters for specialized automated design (CAD) or automated production equipment (CNC) programs. 7. Applies algebraic and geometric formulas and standard tool engineering data to create tool configuration. Applies understanding of ergonomics and tool use environment in determining the appropriate tool configuration. 8. Recommends changes to refine and enhance products and processes by applying continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles and techniques. 9. Maintains tool design, manufacturing operations and technical knowledge by attending in-house training or educational workshops, and reviewing technical vendor/supplier manuals or related publications. 10. Supports the team by accomplishing related results as needed. May provide guidance to others in production or test areas. Work assignments may include cross-functional or project team responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Completion of related trade school program, AA, or equivalent external training. Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the job typically acquired through five years of related experience in drafting and tool design. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Considerable knowledge and understanding of tool design industry practices, standards and techniques. Thorough knowledge of design and drawing practices, tolerancing and use of computer-aided design and basic engineering analysis tools. General knowledge of aerospace or similar industry products and manufacturing processes and materials. Ability to implement and effectively apply continuous improvement methods. Ability to use CAD software proficiently. Ability to use standard business applications software and specialized data analysis tools. May require the use of project management applications. Ability to take initiative on complex assignments and to resolve immediate production problems. May be required to determine methods and procedures on new assignments. Ability to read and interpret technical journals and reports. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry; apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to effectively demonstrate team member competencies and participate in goal-setting, performance feedback, and self-development activities. TYPICAL MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit. The employee frequently is required to use hands to operate a computer and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Also expected of the employee is regular attendance, the ability to work cooperatively and professionally with others and members of the public, and the ability to manage multiple tasks at once. - Pay Range: $24.73/hr to $41.22/hr
