Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Responsible for protecting the environment and the health and safety of the community by identifying problems and finding solutions to eliminate hazards that can affect the overall health of the environment or population. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state and local environmental regulations and ensures necessary records are prepared and maintained according to established guidelines. Is a subject matter expert for one or more aspects of the environment and associated regulatory areas (i.e., air, water and hazardous waste).
  • Researches and investigates to identify, abate or eliminate sources of hazards or pollution that can affect the environment or health of a population. These tasks are necessary to ensure high quality products and services for EnergySolutions customers.
  • Establishes plans for the collection of samples of air, water, soil and/or pollutants to meet permit requirements and demonstrate compliance.
  • Coordinates the removal of physical, biological and chemical hazards.
  • Stays up to date with current and proposed environmental regulatory requirements related to assigned area of responsibility through reviews of federal, state and local regulations and changes to regulations.
  • Recommends and coordinates the development of programs needed to comply with environmental and hazardous materials regulations.
  • Develops and maintains environmental policies, plans and procedures in specific, assigned regulatory area(s).
  • Trains employees-as a subject matter expert-on environmental policies, procedures, plans and regulations.
  • Helps obtain and implement licenses and permits for facilities and ensures compliance with licenses/permits or modifies them as appropriate.
  • Recommends actions for compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluates the success of any steps taken to resolve problems and finds alternative solutions if necessary.
  • Assists with and performs audits, assessments and surveillances related to environmental protection.
  • Evaluates the environmental impact of operations in specified regulatory areas (i.e., air, water and/or
  • hazardous waste) and develops plans to reduce impact(s).
  • Participates in inspections conducted by external regulators, providing inspectors with appropriate documents and identifying environmental control measures.
  • Assists with data collection and tracking activities needed to submit required environmental regulatory reports.
  • Prepares clear and concise written reports based on field inspections for regulators (e.g., monthly and annual reports) and obtains Environmental Compliance manager approvals of submittals prior to their release.
  • Investigates complaints concerning the release of hazardous materials or air pollutants.
  • Develops and maintains management information systems that identify the location of hazardous materials related to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Supervises work of outside contractors involved in removing or testing hazardous materials.
  • Maintains operation and inspection logs.
  • There is no supervision of other workers at this level.
  • Responsible for the quality of his/her own work and satisfying customer (internal and external) specifications.
  • Must be able to work independently and resolve practical problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products and their use

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Ability to use hands and feet to accomplish tasks as assigned
  • Ability to carry up to 25 pounds; reach below shoulder
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and bend/stoop
  • Ability to effectively communicate; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
  • Ability to see close and distant; basic colors
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to work inside an office, outside, in extreme temperatures, and on uneven/slippery walking surfaces
  • Ability to work alone, work with others, and interact with the public
  • Ability to drive a vehicle; perform under deadline pressure
  • Ability to work in a Radiological environment




Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements
Education

  • Bachelor's degree required in engineering or science
  • A bachelor's degree in environmental science with an emphasis on chemistry, biology or geology preferred
