Summary of Position

The Director Lab Operations is responsible for leadership, management, direction setting, and administration of the lab in accordance with CAP and CLIA guidelines for all functional operational areas within Anatomic Pathology and Hemotopathology (if applicable). Other key areas of oversight include; ensuring the lab is performing at required levels in the areas of established productivity metrics, quality assurance, and teammate engagement.



Key Job Elements



  • Establish and revise laboratory policies and procedures; develop and maintain appropriate control and quality assurance procedures; ensure compliance with current safety requirements; coordinate laboratory activities with federal agencies.
  • Participate in long-range planning and budgeting processes; project personnel and equipment needs; develop and monitor the laboratory budget; approve purchase of equipment and supplies too include developing an annual capital forecast.
  • Oversees daily routine laboratory operations on all shifts.
  • Monitors and maintains quality control standards within CAP and CLIA guidelines.
  • Performs teammate training, performance reviews, and coaching.
  • Supports and enables a culture of Service Excellence, Teamwork, Accountability, Integrity, and Respect.
  • Maintains established performance and production standards; proposes continual process improvement for improved efficiency and quality.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement through effective and efficient communication to all levels of the organization.
  • Responsible for turnaround time reporting and client reported errors.
  • Work with senior leadership and other site leaders to ensure all policies and procedures are carried out, and that their unit meets all necessary regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintain knowledge of technological advancements in laboratory testing, computer applications and specialized instrumentation.
  • Acts as final point of contact on technical, procedural, and policy questions. Keeps team informed of new processes and general updates.
  • Regulates all Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Inspection (QI)/Quality Control (QC) to ensure laboratory standards and regulations are maintained.
  • Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Oversees the selection, training, mentoring, and performance evaluation of lab supervisors or managers.

Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience



  • Bachelor's degree in science strongly desired.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification is a plus.
  • 7 + years of experience in an anatomical pathology or Hematopathology lab in a Manager/Director capacity required.
  • Proven experience managing large scale, multi-level lab with 50 or more headcount.
  • Demonstrated skills in technical data interpretation and ability to troubleshoot.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop others and drive for results
  • Possess ability to lead high performance technical team.
  • Knowledge and experience working with diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to be motivational and persuasive.
  • Ability to direct others as well as take direction from others.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of Internet for business use.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-past, high-stress, deadline driven environment.
  • Drive for Results (Service, Quality, and Continuous Improvement) - Ensure procedures and processes are in place that lead to delivery of quality results and continually reassess their effectiveness to achieve continuous improvement.
  • Communication - Proficient verbal and written communication skills. Willingness to share and receive information and ideas from all levels of the organization in order to achieve the desired results.
  • Teamwork - Commitment to the successful achievement of team and organizational goals through a desire to participate with and help other members of the team.
