Job Description

The Packaging Design Engineer supports Sealed Air's sales organization by designing, prototyping, and testing protective packaging solutions, with a strong focus on Instapak foam cushioning. This is a hands-on engineering role that blends CAD design, CNC machining, woodworking, physical testing, and customer-facing communication.

You will own the full end-to-end process: from initial customer opportunity through design, mold fabrication, sample creation, ISTA testing, and final customer presentation. This role is ideal for early-career engineers who want variety, technical depth, and direct customer impact. This role is onsite in West Chester, Ohio.

What You'll Do:

  • Create engineered packaging designs using RhinoCAD or similar CAD tools
  • Develop custom cushion and mold designs for Instapak foam solutions
  • Program and operate CNC router equipment to machine mold components
  • Build molds and wooden frames using woodworking tools (table saw, band saw, nail guns, screw guns)
  • Pour Instapak foam into molds to create prototype cushions
  • Conduct ISTA drop and vibration testing in the PAC lab
  • Analyze test results and prepare technical reports and recommendations
  • Present design concepts and testing outcomes to customers and sales teams
  • Partner closely with sales, service, and customers to diagnose packaging challenges and propose solutions
  • Manage multiple design projects using internal database systems

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Packaging (Engineering or Industrial Design with packaging focus considered)
  • 0-4+ years of experience in packaging engineering or related field
  • CAD proficiency (RhinoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar)
  • Knowledge of ISTA testing standards (drop and vibration)
  • Ability to lift and handle 50-pound items for testing
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Willingness to work onsite full-time in West Chester, Ohio
  • Willingness to travel regionally (~1x/month within a 4 hour driving radius)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with foam or corrugated protective packaging
  • Woodworking experience or comfort with woodworking tools
  • CNC programming experience
  • Exposure to Instapak or other cushioning materials

Why Join this Team:

  • Balanced work: CAD design + hands-on manufacturing + testing + customer interaction
  • Direct customer impact: See your designs come to life and solve real business problems
  • Skill-building: CAD, CNC machining, woodworking, testing methodologies, technical communication
  • Career growth: Clear pathways into service, sales, engineering leadership, or advanced PAC roles
  • Small-team environment: Collaborative, supportive, and backed by a global company
  • End-to-end ownership: Engineers manage the full lifecycle from concept to customer presentation
