Job Overview

The Director, Maintenance manages and oversees maintenance activities across single or multiple Macy's Supply Chain network distribution centers. They lead and mentor facility maintenance teams.

What You Will Do



  • Lead and develop a team of executive and front-line colleagues to maintain all facility, site, and material handling equipment in a fast-paced, large-scale distribution environment.
  • Provide oversight and act as the facility subject matter expert for mechanical systems, fire protection, electrical, plumbing, automation equipment, material handling equipment, conveyor systems, and control systems.
  • Execute activities related to maintenance and housekeeping budgetary planning. Take ownership of the departmental budget and deliver results through efficient financial controls.
  • Collaborate with facility operational teams to plan and execute supply chain strategies.
  • Recommend plans and strategies to enhance operations through the utilization of material handling systems and equipment.
  • Promote and uphold functional procedures and methodologies that enhance building and equipment reliability, safety, and efficiency.
  • Offer recommendations to improve maintenance practices across the network to ensure continuity and standardization.
  • Advocate for the rollout of new technology within the facility and ensure the maintenance team is prepared and takes ownership.
  • Implement a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) methodology to support preventative and predictive practices. Maintain thorough documentation across all maintenance activities and asset histories.
  • Support the network's Root Cause Analysis procedure for equipment failures and communicate findings to benefit distribution centers across the network.
  • Develop cost-effective maintenance, energy consumption, and operational improvement opportunities for the facility and equipment.
  • Act as the Macy's representative for interactions with regulatory agencies, consultants, and local authorities at the facility level.
  • Evaluate the material readiness of assets effectively and reflect them appropriately in a capital and equipment obsolescence replacement schedule.
  • Prepare scope documents and solicit proposals for repair and construction services from third-party service providers.
  • Generate innovative, cost-effective ideas for improving existing material handling systems and optimizing product flow.
  • Serve as an advisor to the corporate engineering team for Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE)
  • mechanical controls regarding design, installation, and long-term maintenance plans during large-scale capital projects.
  • Collaborate closely with vendors during the installation of material handling equipment to ensure adherence to design specifications and Macy's/OSHA safety requirements.
  • Support and lead the facility in corporate initiatives surrounding Energy, Recycling, and Sustainability.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities deemed essential by leadership.


Skills You Will Need

Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead and develop executive and front-line colleagues, as well as mentor maintenance teams.

Technical Expertise: Proficiency in mechanical systems, fire protection, electrical, plumbing, automation equipment, material handling equipment, conveyor systems, and control systems.

Financial Management: Experience in executing maintenance and housekeeping budgetary planning, with a focus on efficient financial controls.

Strategic Collaboration: Ability to collaborate with operational teams to plan and execute supply chain strategies, recommending improvements through the utilization of material handling systems and equipment.

Process Improvement: Proven track record in promoting functional procedures and methodologies that enhance building and equipment reliability, safety, and efficiency.

Project Management: Ability to evaluate asset readiness, prepare scope documents, solicit proposals, and oversee repair and construction projects.

Innovation: Capacity to generate innovative, cost-effective ideas for improving material handling systems and optimizing product flow.

Communication: Open and continuous communication skills, effectively presenting information to various stakeholders.

Decision-Making: Sound decision-making ability in managing multiple processes within a fast-paced environment.

Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems, and AutoCAD (a plus).

Sense of Urgency: Ability to prioritize tasks and act with a sense of urgency.

Analytical Skills: Strong analytical troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.

Contractor Management: Leadership experience in providing direction to contractors and collaborating effectively with building senior-level executives to support day-to-day operations.

  • Candidates with a High School Diploma or equivalent are encouraged to apply.
  • This position requires heavy lifting, constant moving, standing, and reaching with arms and hands.

    • Involves standing for at least two consecutive hours, lifting at least 50lbs. stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders
    • May involve reaching above eye level
    • Requires close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment

  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays based on department and company needs.
