Job Summary

The Quality Lab Technician performs laboratory and field sampling and testing of asphalt, aggregates, and related construction materials to verify conformance with specifications and project requirements. The role supports production and paving operations by providing timely, accurate test results, maintaining equipment and records, and collaborating with plant and field teams to drive quality and safety.

Responsibilities

Sampling and Testing
* Collect representative samples of hot mix asphalt (HMA), aggregates, RAP/RAS, binder, and tack in accordance with company SOPs and DOT/ASTM/AASHTO procedures.

Education
  • High school diploma or GED; vocational/technical schooling preferred. Relevant experience in construction materials testing may substitute for formal education.
Qualifications

* Strong attention to detail and consistency in following standardized test methods.
* Sound judgment and resourcefulness in troubleshooting and reporting.
* Effective communication with lab, plant, paving crews, inspectors, and management.
* Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet production-driven timelines.
* Team-oriented mindset and positive attitude in fast-paced environments.

* Frequent standing and walking on concrete floors; repetitive lifting and carrying of samples and equipment up to 50 lbs multiple times per day.
* Work in a climate-controlled lab and outdoors at plants and job sites on uneven surfaces; exposure to heat, cold, dust, odors, and hot materials.
* Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends during peak paving season; occasional travel between plants and projects.
* Valid driver's license and ability to operate company vehicles as required.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience with performance testing (e.g., IDEAL-CT, Cantabro, Hamburg, APA) where applicable.
  • Familiarity with plant operations and controls, RAP/RAS management, and mix adjustments.
  • Experience implementing control charts and basic statistical process control (SPC).
