About the Role

The Operations and Engineering Department is seeking a motivated Operations & Engineering Intern to assist with a variety of technical, analytical, and operational support projects. This role directly contributes to vessel maintenance planning, repair readiness, and operational efficiency across Matson's containership fleet.

The intern will work closely with engineering staff and gain meaningful, hands on exposure to the systems, processes, and infrastructure that support modern containership operations.

This position requires the successful candidate to work on-site at our Walnut Creek corporate office at least three days per week.

What you'll do:

Data Analysis & Maintenance Planning

  • Compile, organize, and analyze financial and operational data to support maintenance modeling, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Assist in preparing reports and data summaries used for long?term maintenance planning and vessel readiness assessments.

Technical Documentation & Engineering Library Support

  • Review, update, and organize technical documentation and manuals within the engineering library.
  • Ensure documentation is accurate, complete, and aligned with current operational standards.
  • Review and index current library inventory (drawings, manuals, correspondence) with the goal of removing vessels no longer in the fleet.

Dashboard & Reporting Development

  • Contribute to the creation and refinement of engineering financial dashboards used by management for data analysis.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop data models.

You have these qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in Marine Engineering or Engineering Management.
  • Strong Excel skills, including experience with formulas, pivot tables, and data modeling.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Extra credit if you have:

  • Familiarity with Power Query and Power BI is highly preferred; training will be provided as needed.
  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and communicate findings clearly.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Interest in maritime operations, asset management, or technical program support.

The hourly rate is posted for this position.
