Department Description The UCSF Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant Research Program is deeply embedded within the clinicallung transplant program at UCSF. Investigators in the Program are physicians in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Medicine as well as Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery.
Since its inception in 1991, the UCSF Lung Transplant Program has provided lung and heart-lung transplantation to over 1000 patients. UCSF currently averages 65-80 lung transplant procedures per year. It has established a national reputation for clinical excellence and, despite caring for an extremely ill and complicated patient population, for the last 5 years has had the best 1- and 3-year survival rates in the United States according to data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (most recently 97% and 90%, respectively). This accomplishment is due to a highly dedicated and specialized multidisciplinary team of lung transplant pulmonologists (including Dr. Singer), cardiothoracic surgeons, chest radiologists, pathologists, nurse practitioners and coordinators, physical and respiratory therapists, pharmacists, social workers, and financial counselors.
The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine has a long and storied history of excellence in basic and clinical research. First developed by Dr. Julius Comroe in the late 1950's in collaboration with the Cardiovascular Research Institute, the division has trained nearly a quarter of all academic pulmonologists practicing in the United States. The division has included prominent scientists, such as John Severinghaus, John Clements, Jay Nadel, and John Murray, who have been seminal leaders in the field of academic pulmonary medicine. It currently includes 76 full-time faculty members (including clinicians, clinician-scientists, and PhDs) and has trained more than 120 Professors of Medicine, including 28 current and former division chiefs, 20 Department Chairs, 5 Deans and 1 University President. Faculty members in our Division participate in virtually every nationally funded pulmonary disease research network and have well-funded and highly productive research programs at each of 5 UCSF campuses. Our Division currently has annual extramural grant funding of $55,883,256, including annual NIH funding of $35,744,487. Remarkably, our Division accounts for 5.5% of all NIH funding to UCSF. In addition to this funding, we are fortunate to have an endowment of more than $60 million (https://pulmonary.ucsf.edu/ireland), which provides substantial flexibility to move in new directions and support trainees and junior faculty even in the face of external economic uncertainty.
The Division sits within the UCSF Department of Medicine, which has ranked at or near the top among all departments of medicine in research dollars granted by the NIH. The current total funding from the NIH for the department is over $200 million. In 2018-2019, Department of Medicine investigators received over 231 new peer-reviewed grants and fellowships, as well as a combined total of 279 new subawards, joint personnel agreements, and contracts for a combined dollar amount of $413 million.
