Job Summary

Under general supervision, the staff chaplain provides direct spiritual care, crisis and emotional support to patients, their families, interdisciplinary team members, and allied health students, with a focus on cardiovascular units including heart and lung transplant patients. The chaplain clinically mentors ACPE chaplain learners in our large program, especially in Adult ICU care. Staff chaplains cover the department's on-call through Voalte/pager during day shifts when learners are in program once a week, engage every three-week swing shift, and once a year overnight or weekend on-call shift. As experienced spiritual care specialists, staff chaplains offer education and foster conversations and clarifications regarding the cultural, ethical, and religious needs of patients that can affect patient care, family interactions, and interdisciplinary team and allied health student performance/resiliency. Staff Chaplains assist in developing and maintaining positive community relations, and coordination of volunteer community spiritual leaders and UCSF contracted additional spiritual resources to meet specific patient needs via telehealth or in-person visits.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors, including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The hourly rate of pay $30.51-$65.18 and is subject to change based on union requirements. Department Description

Spiritual Care & Chaplaincy Education provides multi-faith, emotional, intellectual, crisis, and spiritual support to the patients, parents/guardians, families, visitors, allied health learners and the interdisciplinary staff of UCSF by establishing and maintaining relationships that enable care for people in the context of their spiritual or existential needs and resources.

Required Qualifications

• One or more years of experience working as a healthcare chaplain, post-supervised training, or equivalent.
• Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, or six years of relevant training and graduate-level experience.
• Completion of at least four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education, accredited by the ACPE: the Standard for Spiritual Care and Education
• Advanced chaplaincy judgment, triage, and trauma-informed skills.
• Full knowledge of principles and practices of delivering spiritual care and short-term counseling to patients and families in a clinical environment. Skilled at providing spiritual support and guidance on the issues of death, dying, grief, loss, and disability.
• Thorough knowledge of a variety of religious and spiritual traditions, and of giving appropriate spiritual care in a multi-faith clinical setting.
• Thorough knowledge of the ethical and confidentiality issues involved in clinical chaplaincy.
• Flexibility and adaptability to remain calm and deal effectively with changing situations involving crises and stress.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with and accept people of diverse beliefs, cultures, ethnicities, ages, and health conditions.
• Ability to communicate with compassion and clarity and to work independently with patients and families, while also participating in the healthcare team, providing coordinated care.
• Thorough organizational, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
• Thorough knowledge of spiritual assessment models, solid spiritual assessment skills, and the ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, spiritual assessments of patients/families to the health care team.
• Demonstrated ability to establish connections with key people quickly and function well in crisis/trauma situations, demonstrating compassion, flexibility, sensitivity, and command when needed.
• Demonstrated skill in assessing and supporting the needs of patients and surrogates in intensive care, serious illness, organ failure, or post-transplantation. Proven skill in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams supporting patients or surrogates in serious illness / intensive care.
• Strong interest in or proven track record of supporting and clinically mentoring chaplain clinical learners.
• Excellent communication and spiritual counseling skills.
• Ability to work onsite four days a week at our San Francisco Parnassus location.

License/Certification

Licenses (required): Endorsement, ordination, commissioning, or official recognition by one's affiliation group to function as a professional chaplain. Maintains good standing in the affiliation group.

Certifications (required):

• Provisional or Board Certification, or eligibility for such certification, with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: The Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC).
• Maintains good standing through service in the Board Certification organization.
• If incumbent is not already certified, the incumbent will work towards Board Certification within 18 months on the job.
