Job Summary

Material Evaluation Specialist is responsible for managing, coordinating, and continually improving all material assessment activities within the organization. This includes supporting regulatory compliance, supporting volume reduction practices for reuse, and recycling in collaboration with all stakeholders.

Job Duties/Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Design and implement strategies for the integrated management of treatable materials (radioactive, special, hazardous, non-hazardous waste)
  • Responsible for detailed reviews of client radioactive materials, evaluate against acceptance conditions, present and defend acceptability, prepare material data packages for contract
  • Interface with in country and International regional managers who will lead the interaction with the client to ensure accurate and correct material data is presented for assessment.
  • Interpret and analyze material data received from clients and provide an initial sentencing summary and recommendations, prior to presenting to STEP committee for formal acceptance.
  • Develop and maintain procedures for material assessment and approval and secondary waste return
  • Support compliance of all treatable material management activities with current regulations from consigning countries and in US.
  • Manage relationships and performance of external service providers for material treatment; such as free release scrap merchants
  • Review reports (monthly/quarterly/annual) on treatable material management performance, including key performance indicators (KPIs); such as recycling rates, free release percentages, with regard to Identifying improvement opportunities for the efficiency of the recycle business.
  • Develop junior staff, as required, for material assessment (covering radiological, chemical and physical properties) for re-use or recycle.
  • Monitor and analyze costs associated with recycle management. - Identify and recommend solutions to optimize spend without compromising compliance or quality of the service.
  • Collaborate in the execution of internal and external audits.
  • Manage non-conformities associated with the recycle business and develop corrective action plans.




Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements
Education

  • Degree (or equivalent discipline) in physics or Chemistry or Radiochemistry.

Certifications

  • Member of a technical society (e.g MCRSP)

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years related experience
  • 5 years of field work required before promotion



Preferred Experience

  • Experience in Reactor technology
  • Experience of radioactive materials characterisation
  • Experience of radioactive materials transport (Class 7)
  • Experience of working in US, Europe or Asia



Required and Desired Skills



    • In-depth knowledge of European & US environmental regulations related to waste management & knowledge of recycling, recovery, and disposal processes.
    • Familiarity with environmental and quality management systems (e.g., and the US equivalents ISO 14001 & ISO 9001).
    • Excellent data analysis and problem-solving skills, including creation, use and interpretation of large/complex excel spreadsheets.
    • Strong planning, organization, and priority management skills.
    • Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to interface with various professionals and authorities.



Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder
  • Ability to use hands and feet to accomplish tasks as assigned
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend/stoop, crouch, kneel and twist at the waist
  • Ability to effectively communicate; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
  • Ability to work inside an office, outside and in extreme temperatures
  • Ability to wear chemical resistant coveralls and respiratory protection
  • Ability to work with machinery vibration, power tools, moving objects, and slippery/uneven walking surfaces
  • Ability to work alone and work with others; perform under deadline pressure
  • Ability to operate equipment, drive a vehicle and travel overnigt
