Advance your clinical skills through the University of Iowa Health Care Critical Care Fellowship for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). This is a oneyear, postgraduate, multidisciplinary fellowship designed for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants seeking advanced training in critical care medicine.

This combined medical and surgical fellowship provides comprehensive exposure across multiple critical care specialties. Fellows develop advanced clinical knowledge and procedural skills while working as an integral member of a multidisciplinary critical care team.

Program Overview:

APP fellows work alongside critical care physician teams at University of Iowa Health Care and train in parallel with physician critical care fellows across medical, surgical, and anesthesia programs. Educational experiences include daily patient rounds, structured didactic sessions, handson workshops, and completion of critical care-specific certificate courses.

Throughout the fellowship, APP fellows progressively assume responsibility for patient care under supervision, managing patients they follow as part of the critical care team.

Clinical Training and Procedures:

During your training, you will receive advanced training and perform procedures typically performed as part of a critical care multidisciplinary team, including:



  • Central line insertion
  • Arterial line insertion
  • Endotracheal intubation
  • Bedside ultrasound for hemodynamic assessment
  • Bronchoscopy for airway evaluation
  • Chest tube insertion


Clinical Rotations:



  • Medical Intensive Care Unit
  • Surgical and Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit
  • Medical Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit
  • Surgical Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit
  • 6 weeks of electives of your choice
  • Ultrasound workshop


Program Start Date: October 2026

Eligibility Requirements:



  • Physician Assistant (PA): Applicants must meet Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners requirements, including graduation from an accredited PA program and current NCCPA certification.


  • Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP): Applicants must hold a Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing. Degrees in related fields are not accepted. Candidates must be eligible for Iowa RN and ARNP licensure and hold national certification in their specialty area.
