The R&D Engineering Manager is responsible for coordinating department activities to design new products, modify existing designs, improve production techniques, and develop test procedures. This role involves managing specialized engineers, overseeing project completion, and ensuring alignment with organizational needs. The position requires a strong grasp of mechanical and biomedical engineering principles, along with leadership skills to inspire and develop team members. Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinates department activities to design new products and modify existing designs.
- Manages and directs specialized engineers working on programs to meet organizational needs.
- Analyzes technology trends and market demand to plan projects.
- Engages with customers to understand the challenges and goals of the full surgical procedure.
- Confers with management, production, and marketing staff to determine engineering feasibility and cost effectiveness.
- Directs personnel activities such as recruitment, hiring, and performance evaluations.
- Responsible for the coordination and completion of projects, setting deadlines, and monitoring progress.
- Facilitates team and business meetings effectively and keeps project teams informed of changes.
- Challenges others to develop as leaders and inspires coworkers to attain goals.
- Suggests areas for improvement in internal processes and leads internal teams.
- Ensure lessons learned are shared and applied appropriately to improve future projects.
- Ability to translate and/or derive customer requirements to engineering specifications.
- Ability to plan, conduct, and supervise engineering assignments involving several smaller or lower priority projects or one major project.
- Ensure effective cross-functional team collaboration throughout the NPD process.
- Ability to apply creative problem solving while navigating project challenges.
- Ability to effectively utilize ConMed processes and procedures.
- Ability to teach engineers how to best utilize ConMed processes and procedures.
- Ability to conduct root-cause investigation and recommend corrective action for design issues in existing products.
- Resolves and/or escalates issues as appropriate.
- Coordinates engineers and technicians assigned to projects.
Minimum Requirements
- B.S. in Engineering, Biomedical or Mechanical engineering
- 5 years of product development experience.
Preferred Requirements
- Master's Degree
- Medical device experience working in compliance with FDA QSR/ISO 13485 with strong understanding of Design Controls.
Other Attributes
- Deep knowledge of medical device usage by clinicians.
- Management skills including performance management, planning, scheduling, budgeting, specification writing, public speaking, and interdepartmental coordination.
