Below, you'll find other important information about this position. The incumbent will maintain the embryology and hormone laboratories according to CAP and CLIA standards. The primary duties will be to perform laboratory testing in the hormone laboratory and to perform laboratory procedures in the embryology laboratory of the Reproductive Endocrine Laboratory of the WVU Center for Reproductive Medicine. The incumbent will be part of a small team that functions to provide services in embryology, andrology and hormone analyses; all of which the technologist should be able to perform. They will serve as backup personnel in the andrology laboratory. Weekend rotations for coverage of clinic duties will be required at a minimum of one in every third weekend, although coverage during two out of every three weekends is likely.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided:

MD: No State License required

OH: No State License required

PA: No State License required

WV: Medical Laboratory Scientist license or Trainee license

2. Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology/Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Science OR Bachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science, or 30 or more years of previous experience concurrent with CLIA grandfathered exception.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Three (3) months of experience with embryology or andrology procedures in either a clinical or research/education setting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Additional continuing education credits in laboratory science.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Three (3) years of experience performing advanced embryology procedures (ICSI, Biopsy).

2. Proven ability to cryopreserve and warm embryos and gametes with acceptable pregnancy rates.

3. Familiarity with work patterns of an IVF clinic.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Assists the laboratory director to maintain the embryology laboratory in accordance with all CAP, CLIA and SART guidelines

2. Oversees all quality control in the embryology laboratory. Provides quality-related documentation for the embryology laboratory to the laboratory director for review at established intervals.

3. Performs vitrification and warming of gametes and embryos proficiently, maintaining acceptable pregnancy rates.

4. Manages shipments of incoming and outgoing embryos and oocytes. This includes planning for shipments, completing documentation and receiving shipments with placement into cryo inventory.

5. Performs insemination of oocytes using both conventional and micromanipulation (ICSI) techniques with an acceptable fertilization rate.

6. Performs culture of gametes and embryos using standardized techniques according to laboratory protocol.

7. Evaluates the morphology of oocytes, zygotes and embryos using an established morphology system.

8. Performs impeccable documentation of all required documentation. This includes data entered using an electronic medical record system, data entry to internal databases used for quality control and data entry to the SART database.

9. Performs embryo biopsies (or is working toward credentialing to perform) for PGT testing at an acceptable rate.

10. Performs embryo transfers and maintains an acceptable pregnancy rate.

11. Performs oocyte retrievals and oocyte denudation.

12. Assists in the chemistry and andrology laboratories as needed. For chemistry, this includes being proficient in all areas of hormone testing using automated equipment. For andrology, this includes being proficient in all areas of andrology including semen analyses, sperm cryopreservation/warming and semen preparation for IUI or ART procedures.

13. Maintains inventory of the cryopreserved oocytes and embryos in the laboratory.

14. Works regular weekend and holiday rotation in addition to covering emergency services (i.e. alarm call for equipment failure) when needed.

15. Demonstrates flexibility to meet the needs of the clinic in regard to changes in work volume, planned change, scheduling changes and emergency call-backs (i.e. weather, disaster or alarm system).

16. Maintains confidentiality according to policy when interacting with patients, physicians, families, co-workers and the public regarding demographic and clinical information. Complies with Notices of Privacy Practices, and the Patient's Rights and Responsibilities. Train new personnel in hormone testing procedures.

17. Complies with annual competency requirements related to emergency preparedness, hazards, blood borne pathogens, universal precautions, infection control, electrical/fire safety, material safety data sheets and any other topic deemed appropriate to assigned work areas.

18. Participates in performance and quality improvement (i.e. follows established protocol, identifies deviations or deficiencies in standards/systems/processes and communicates problems to the laboratory director or clinic manager).

19. Communicates effectively verbally and in writing and places a high emphasis on customer service. Receives and relays pertinent information to other members of the healthcare team.

20. Utilizes universal precautions and standards of inflectional control when handling all clinical specimens.

2. Individual must be a non-smoker due to strict air quality requirements necessary for gamete and embryo culture.

3. Visual acuity must be exceptional. Manual dexterity is required to operate microscopes, pipettes, keyboards, and other laboratory equipment.
