Overview:

We are seeking an Operations Specialist for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). This position reports to the HFIR Operations Section Head and interfaces with all levels within the Research Reactors Division. This position resides in the HFIR Operations Section, Research Reactors Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serving as the primary support team member for the Operations Section Head to ensure daily operations are safe, effective, and performed in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Interfacing with other sections to understand planned operations within the facility and ensures activities follow the facility procedures and processes.
  • Performing troubleshooting and improvement activities for emerging issues within the operations management scope of responsibility to resolve issues and improve effectiveness.
  • Coordinating, monitoring, and assessing of compliance requirements.
  • Serving as a special team member as needed for coordination of large, cross-cutting activities within the facility that involve multiple interfaces that cross organizational lines.
  • Presenting technical briefings or presentations, as required.
  • Determining processes that ensure changes are within the scope and methods appropriate for the facility.
  • Supporting the division with internal and external assessments, as either a team lead or a team member, as necessary.
  • Performing other duties as may be assigned by the Operations Manager.
  • Maintaining qualification as Shift Supervisor on the HFIR.
  • Maintaining certification as a Senior Reactor Operator on the HFIR.

The HFIR is a 24/7 facility, therefore there is potential for:

  • Occasional shift work for shift relief may be required
  • Some overtime may be required

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree is an engineering, science or technical field with at least 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Four years of nuclear experience (two years may be nuclear/non-nuclear power plant experience).
  • Three years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain qualification as Shift Supervisor on the HFIR, which requires a Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) certification as a prerequisite.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing, leading, and motivating staff
  • Experience with DOE Order 422.1, Conduct of Operations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Special Requirements:

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
