JOB FUNCTION / SUMMARY:

Responsible for leading a team of technical engineers dedicated to ensuring the performance, reliability, and scalability of critical systems and applications. This role combines hands-on systems expertise with strategic planning and leadership. The manager will develop and execute performance strategies, guide architectural decisions, and establish a robust performance engineering program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead initiatives to identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks across applications, services, and infrastructure.
  • Develop a long-term performance and scalability roadmap aligned with company growth.
  • Collaborate with architecture and development teams to embed performance and reliability requirements into design from inception.
  • Advocate for scalable patterns, resilient architectures, and efficient resource utilization.
  • Oversee the selection, implementation, and management of tools for performance testing, monitoring, and diagnostics.
  • Drive automation to streamline performance validation and analysis.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and provide guidance on performance tuning and system improvements.
  • Stay current with trends in performance engineering, cloud, microservices, and distributed systems.
  • Establish processes, documentation, and governance for performance engineering practices.
  • Manage a small team of technical engineers, creating a foundation for a high-performing Performance & Reliability function.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE:

  • Bachelor's degree or at least 10 years of experience in software, systems, or performance engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience, Master's degree preferred.
  • Preferred degree in Computer science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on experience with performance testing, system tuning, and diagnosing bottlenecks.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems, cloud platforms, and modern monitoring tools.
  • Experience with scripting or automation.
  • 2 years leading engineers or serving as a technical lead/mentor.
  • Experience collaborating with architecture and development teams on performance-related improvements.
  • Performs other related job duties and special projects as assigned.

ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to travel if required to perform the essential job functions.
  • Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to operate related equipment to perform the essential job functions.
  • Ability to read and interpret a document if required to perform the essential job functions.
  • Ability to lift/move/carry approximately 10 pounds if required to perform the essential job functions. If the employee is unable to lift/move/carry this weight and can be accommodated without causing the department/division an "undue hardship" then the employee must be accommodated; hence omitting lifting/moving/carrying as a physical requirement.
