Safety Specialist


Department: Risk Management


Salary Range: $58,676.80 - $87,984



Job Summary: The goal of the position is to facilitate the Safety and Health programs at Milwaukee County. The Safety Specialist will provide guidance, implementation, and monitoring for safety compliance and other related functions within an assigned division.



Job Responsibilities:



  • Safety and Health Compliance - Develop and maintain a general knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements to assist the division with safety compliant procedures. Support the Risk Management Team with division specific and County wide health and safety issues, program development and maintenance, as well as project management.
  • Safety Education & Training - Responsible for developing, maintaining, coordinating, and conducting current safety training and recordkeeping within assigned division, and other divisions as needed. Resolve issues related to training assignment and recordkeeping. Implement and facilitate the design of safety training materials used across the County.
  • Maintain Risk Management, Safety Program Management - Ensure Risk Management safety policies and programs are maintained. Incorporate Risk Management directives into daily safety program to facilitate positive safety culture.
  • Accident Investigation - Investigate all work-related injuries and illnesses. Report to the accident scene promptly, gather information through pictures, employee interviews, and other investigative techniques. Interview staff and leaders, perform root cause analysis and recommend corrective actions.
  • Safety Inspections and Audits - Perform continual jobsite and facility visits conducting toolbox talks for all shifts within the division. Complete jobsite inspections and audits on different shifts as needed.
  • Safety Committee Participation - Attend and participate in county wide Safety Committee meetings. Organize and prepare materials to lead division specific safety committee meetings.
  • Safety Reporting & Communication - Produce written and verbal communication including reports, applications, forms, presentation, newsletters, and correspondence to internal and external agencies as required.



Minimums:



  • Current residency within the state of Wisconsin upon application required.
  • A valid state of Wisconsin driver's license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Construction Management, OR related field.
  • Experience in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Construction Management, Employee Safety or closely related. Experience obtained through internships, volunteer experience, or college projects will be accepted.
  • In lieu of bachelor's degree, candidates with a High School diploma or GED equivalent and at least three (3) years of related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets.


Note: Occasional shift adjustments will be required for presentations and facilitating trainings to shift work populations.
