Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director, ITS Network Services, serves as a technical member of the UCSB Network Operations Center (NOC) to provide network and internet connectivity to campus buildings, the North Hall Data Center, and wireless service supporting all campus academic, business operations, and residential facilities. Duties include the design, implementation, evaluation and administration of wired and wireless network systems, including routers, switches, wireless controllers, authentication and accounting systems, and virtual private network (VPN) servers. Develops scripts and processes for system integration, data collection and reporting, and network monitoring for cloud-hosted and local environments. Serves as a technical consultant in the planning, design, and operation of network services. Implements and manages change-control and inventory management system processes. Processes Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) copyright infringement allegations in accordance with federal law and University policy.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training Bachelor's Degree.
  • 1-3 years: Practical experience with the design, deployment and troubleshooting of wired and wireless networks, including complex inter-domain authentication processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of professional communications and network concepts necessary to resolve issues using established parameters, creativity and independent judgment, escalating as necessary.
  • Thorough understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 3 protocols at a basic level and layer 2 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
  • Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Able to perform administrative functions and moderate scripting on Linux platforms.
  • Thorough and broad knowledge and experience working with network management systems.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

60% Network Operations

  • Implement, maintain and operate routers, switches, wireless access points and controllers, VPN devices and related services in support of the Network Operations Center by leveraging technologies including OSPF/BGP, Access Control Lists (ACLs), Monitoring Platforms, Traffic Management, and Network Management Systems.
  • Diagnoses and resolves network connectivity issues involving wired and wireless networks with an emphasis on ISO layers 1-3.
  • Leads network equipment deployment and replacement projects, routinely manages and maintains the NOC asset inventory, provides network availability and performance metrics, and ensures fulfillment of NOC service level agreements in both cloud-hosted and local environments.
  • Performs pre-purchase equipment and software evaluations, and performs or coordinates site preparation for equipment installations.
  • Installs and provisions network service for customers of the North Hall Data Center.
  • Ensures compliance with Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) through customer contact and automation of DMCA response processes.

20% Development and Maintenance

  • Develop and implement network management scripts and software.
  • Integrates network monitoring, reporting and alerting systems.
  • Develops automated data-driven reporting to provide the organization with network-oriented key performance indicators.
  • Proactive Network Maintenance and Integrity of the campus network through network monitoring and response to failing network equipment or UPS.

15% System Administration

  • Provide full life-cycle administration, implementation, and support of servers and hosted services for the Network Operations Center (NOC) and Security Operations Center (SOC), including unix-style operating systems, data backups, SQL databases, RADIUS AAA, DNS, DHCP, and web servers.
  • Install, operate and maintain containerized software instances using Docker and/or similar technologies.
  • Select, purchase and manage server hardware, bare-metal installations, virtualized systems including KVM and VMWare, and associated UPS devices and out-of-band management consoles.

5% Other

  • Other duties as assigned.
