Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Advanced Practice Nurse within the Office of Human Research Services at the Rutgers Cancer Institute.
The Advanced Practice Nurse will serve as an expert clinical practitioner and member of the research team for the Office of Human Research Services ( OHRS). This position will provide research support, clinical trial management and clinical care, consultation, education and patient care management and expertise.

Advanced nursing practice is the utilization of professional nursing knowledge. Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) function as advanced practice professionals in expanded roles. This requires collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to provide for assessment and therapeutic management of patient/family needs. Care is provided to oncology patients in the ambulatory and hospital settings (pending privileging process). The Advanced Practice Nurse will work within a multidisciplinary unit that is designed to meet the needs of specialized cancer populations, i.e., disease- specific settings. The major responsibilities include expanded patient assessment, triage, coordination and documentation of care to a specified group of adult patients older than 18 years of age. This includes care of adults at various developmental stages including geriatrics.

Among the key duties for this position are the following:

  • Manages, coordinates and assumes responsibility for activities of assigned aspects of specific research protocols to ensure safe and competent care and effective protocol management.
  • Performs comprehensive initial and episodic health histories and physical exams; in order to identify existing or potential health problems. Brings abnormalities to the attention of the Principal Investigator.
  • Initiates and implements an individualized nursing and medical plan of care in collaboration with members of interdisciplinary team.
  • Initiates appropriate diagnostic, therapeutic, medical and nursing actions in conjunction with physician and as outlined in the research protocol. Monitors study participants to ensure that the research protocol is being followed.
  • Administers investigational agents if need per protocol.
  • Provides follow-up care including acute and routine examinations. Assesses progress, identifies problems, initiates preventive measures, recognizes emergent problems, initiates proper care in collaboration with physician.
  • Monitors and adjusts patients' medication according to research protocol or medical plan of care including adequate pain control. Implements nutritional therapies, as appropriate.
  • Assists with the implementation of research protocols and develops study specific templates/documentation.
  • Demonstrates in-depth oncology-specific, as well as general medical-surgical knowledge base. Provides rational explanation for clinical decisions made or actions taken based on one or more of the following: Standard Operating Procedures established by the Cancer Institute of New Jersey; scientific principle; logic; intuition; relevant, effective experience.
  • Serves as a "role model" in advanced practice oncology nursing.
  • Participates in professional organizations.
  • Attends relevant continuing education programs with population specific focus. Records activities in employee development record.

Mid Range Salary 167,479.00
Maximum Salary 191,311.00

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a minimum of a Masters' Degree required.
  • Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the Board of Nursing with prescriptive authority in the State of New Jersey.
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner with an Oncology Specialization required, if an Oncology Specialization is not present, the Oncology Specialization must be obtained within 1 year of employment.
  • At least two (2) years of nursing experience in the Oncology specialty area in a hospital or clinic setting, preferably in an Advanced Practice role.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the Board of Nursing with prescriptive authority in the State of New Jersey.
  • American Heart Association: Basic Cardiac Life Support.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
  • Possesses own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clinical research experience preferred.
