Through advising, programming, advocacy, and education, SJE fosters leadership development, community engagement, and intersectional approaches to student success across campus. As one of four cultural centers within the Division of Student Affairs' Cultural Center Collaborative-including the Paul Robeson Cultural Center, Asian American Cultural Center, and Center for Latino Arts and Culture-SJE contributes to the collective mission of supporting historically underrepresented and marginalized communities across Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Administrative Coordinator for Center for Social Justice Education and LGBT Communities ( SJE). Reporting to the Director, the Administrative Coordinator provides comprehensive administrative, budgetary, and programmatic support for the unit.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Serves as the primary administrative point of contact for the Center, overseeing business functions, contracts, invoices, payroll, and purchasing, while coordinating space reservations and managing logistical operations.
  • Collaborates with professional staff to plan and implement programs, trainings, and events such as LGBTQIA+ Welcome, Q-mmunity, RU Black Pride, Rainbow Graduation, and other signature initiatives.
  • Supervises and mentors student employees, coordinating recruitment, training, and ongoing development to ensure effective support for daily operations.
  • Provides leadership in communications, marketing, and storytelling efforts, maintaining an updated web and digital presence that reflects the mission and values of the Center.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least two (2) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of student affairs and programming in a higher education setting.
Certifications/Licenses
  • A valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication with attention to detail, as well as strong organizational and time management and event coordination skills
  • Must possess strong customer service, and problem solving skills and ability to communicate effectively with new students, parents/families, faculty/staff and student leaders/employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to possess a calm demeanor when communicating with different constituencies and diverse audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and adhere to deadlines.
  • Cultural competency to work with LGBTQIA2S+ and other diverse students on a range of academic, student life, admissions, financial aid, counseling, health, disability and safety issues at a large, multi-faceted research university.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google, Outlook, Teams, and virtual platforms such as Zoom.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a constructive, collaborative member of the Cultural Center Collaborative.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of procurement/purchasing, contract preparation and bid processes.
Equipment Utilized
  • Proficiency in using Apple or PC computer systems; Microsoft Office Applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google platform applications such as Docs and Forms, Canva, and Adobe Suites; Zoom and other videoconferencing platforms.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Special Conditions

  • Available to work nights and weekends on occasion with schedules adjusted accordingly.
  • May be required to travel to other campus locations and offices and lift boxes related to promotional items and programmatic equipment, as needed.
