GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the leadership of the Director of Health Information, acts within established hospital, clinic, and department policies and procedures. Primarily responsible for planning, directing and coordinating the activities and functions of health information including documentation integrity, electronic medical record functions, release of information, scanning, analysis, deficiency tracking and medical record document type assignment.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, values and goals and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Manages the procedures and practices of HIM department to ensure efficiency, customer satisfaction, compliance with regulatory requirements and the organization's strategic plan.

3. *Adjusts medical record operations by continually identifying the needs of medical staff regarding the use of the electronic medical record, required clinical documentation, new regulations, and other support services.

4. *Oversees the departmental budgetary procedure to ensure proper operational and capital planning, appropriate and efficient use of resources, and consistent compliance to budgetary and fiscal controls.

5. *Responsible for the personnel management functions (hiring, training, supervising, coaching, mentoring, retraining and evaluating). Provides staff leadership and maintains staff work schedule to obtain an efficient and cooperative environment; reviews and approves employee timecards.

6. Collects and prepares data for specialized studies and reporting.

7. *Establishes ongoing rapport with physicians regarding documentation questions.

8. *Oversees documentation integrity ensuring the accuracy, completeness and consistency of clinical documentation to support chart completion and reporting of high-quality healthcare data.

9. *Evaluates new form requests and appropriately assigns document types for filing into the electronic medical record.

10. *Oversees the departmental budgetary procedure to ensure proper operational and capital planning, appropriate and efficient use of resources, and consistent compliance to budgetary and fiscal controls.

11. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

12. Participates in and/or leads meetings, committees, strategic planning and lean projects as assigned.

13. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of the principles, practices and application of personnel management.

2. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws as they relate to health information management, HIPAA, and release of information.

3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

4. Knowledge of medical terminology.

5. Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.

6. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

7. Ability to coordinate a complex staff schedule.

8. Ability to schedule, direct, counsel and evaluate employee work and performance.

9. Ability to monitor employees' workflow and make adjustments accordingly.

10. Ability to make difficult decisions in the best interest of the Medical Center and remain calm in adverse situations.

11. Ability to develop written policies and procedures, memoranda and performance evaluations with measurable behaviors.

12. Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and work as a team member.

13. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

14. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteer and ancillary departments.

15. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

16. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate's degree in health information science or health information-related field of study required. Bachelor's degree in health information management preferred. Current certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) required.

Minimum of three (3) years' experience in health information management required. Prior supervisory experience required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
