Position Title: Family Peer Advocate Department: Community Engagement Reports to: Program Manager (Allyship Services) Location: Hybrid-Flex Schedule: Monday - Friday, Saturdays as needed Hourly Pay: $29.23 - $32.97 Travel: Field work required in all NYC boroughs Formerly the Mental Health Association of New York City (MHA-NYC), Vibrant Emotional Health's groundbreaking solutions have delivered high quality services and support, when, where and how people need it for over 50 years. Position Overview: Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Family Peer Advocate is critical in ensuring the program is a safe and affirming space for LGBTQIA+ youth and their families. Family Peer Advocates are committed to the well-being of all, demonstrate respect in every aspect of their work, and thrive in a collaborative team environment. They possess the skills to build and maintain strong relationships. This position will support the impact, growth and trust of Vibrant's programs and its position as a leader within the mental health sphere within NYC via community led spaces and ongoing engagement efforts. The approach centers enhancing parental support which impacts the mental health of young New Yorker's . Duties/Responsibilities: Collaborate with families to assess their needs and link them to appropriate resources Share personal knowledge and experiences about the youth serving systems Partner with all Vibrant community programs to provide LGBTQIA+ supportive services Conduct outreach and presentations in communities, schools, early intervention programs, clinics, and other community-based providers with a special emphasis on connecting with communities that have been historically hard to reach Facilitate /co-facilitate parenting education and support groups Conduct home and community visits to meet families in locations that allow for the best possible opportunity for assistance Organize and support social/recreational activities for families and youth, centering mental health awareness Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of the work completed with individuals and families Identify local partners and citywide resources Support Advisory Groups Additional duties as assigned Required Skills/ Abilities: Must exhibit a commitment to the well-being and competent care for all Show respect in all aspects of work Trainings, workshops and group facilitation experience Collaborative, team-oriented spirit Possessing wisdom gained through lived experience Ability to build and maintain relationships with communities and partners Required Qualifications: The Family Peer Advocate (FPA) will be a parent/caregiver of a child who has experienced social, emotional, developmental, substance use, and/or behavioral challenges and has 'lived experience' navigating multiple children serving systems on behalf of their child(ren) with social, emotional, developmental, health and/or behavioral healthcare needs. Experience working with LGBTQIA+ youth and caregivers/parents Opportunity to obtain the NYS Family Peer Advocate (FPA) certification if not already held, with Vibrant providing dedicated support and resources to ensure successful completion within 18 months of being hired Strong written and verbal communication skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Work flexible hours, as required Bilingual and bi-cultural candidates are encouraged to apply Candidates possessing exceptional skills but not all of the qualifications are also encouraged to apply Physical and Sensory Requirements: 75-100% Travel within NYC boroughs Mostly sedentary work; using standard office equipment including: a computer, keyboard, and telephone Ability to work collaboratively with staff, program participants, service providers and other stakeholders Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time Ability to remain calm and composed under stress Ability to respond to telephones and other auditory stimulation Ability to evaluate/interpret information and make independent judgment/decisions Excellent comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, supplemental income insurance, pre-tax transit/parking, pre-tax FSA for medical and dependent care, and 401K available. 4 weeks' vacation, plum benefits, etc. Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they are able to perform every task in the job description.
